Naughty Dog to use existing engine for PS4

Naughty Dog has told Digital Spy that it'll use its existing engine when creating PS4 games.

Speaking to the site, Game director Bruce Straley explained how the developer has learned lessons from the previous console transition.

"We learned a big lesson coming from PS2 to PS3," he told the site.

"There was a lot of hype over what next-gen was going to be. It was all going to be like movies, like a pre-rendered cutscene-style fidelity.

"That turned out not to be true. Granted, what we're able to do now is pretty damn close, but it took Naughty Dog four games to get there - one of the top developers in the industry with some on the most amazing scientists working in our programming department."

"We scrapped everything at the beginning of Uncharted 1, and we had a perfectly good engine with the Jak & Daxter franchise.

"We could have started with something there and then built off of it and only changed the pieces and parts as we needed, when we needed. And that really caused a lot of turmoil.

"Again, we were creating a new IP, with a new engine, with a lot of weird expectations. Nobody had a dev kit soon enough, and as we all know, trying to figure out how to programme for a whole new piece of hardware was really difficult."

Straley continued: "We learned our lesson in saying, as we move into development into next-gen, we want to take our current engine, port it immediately over as is and say, 'Okay, we have a great AI system, we have a good rendering system'.

"We have all these things that already work. Only when we hit a wall will we say, 'When do we need to change something? When do we need to scale it?

"'When does the gameplay, when does the story, when does the world that we need to create - when does this engine hit the wall? Right, now we need to change this part of the engine.'

"Hindsight's 20-20, and it sounds obvious to say it, but it's one of those things that you learn in development. We've gained something from this experience, and now we want to apply it moving into next gen."

With Naughty Dog all set to release The Last of Us on PS3, speculation will no doubt be rife as to what its second team has been up too as far as PS4 is concerned. Will we find out at E3? we sure hope so.

Look out for our The Last of Us review next week.

if what they have now took three games to get right it makes sense to build upon that instead of scrapping and starting again , sure Naughty Dog will have some thing come E3

I would say it's a great move. Enhancing what already makes TLOU look gorgeous means minimal work to get a launch window title ready. Hopefully something new, give Drake a break! A new engine in a couple of years that Sony can farm out to other first parties Frostbite style would be great.

I wouldn't complain about an Uncharted 4. But how about a new Jak & Daxter? That'd be pretty awesome.

i'm about half way through Uncharted 2, and I'm loving it. A fourth would be great, but I think they need to not overuse the franchise. Keep the players salivating for another uncharted, but show something new at E3, or a new Jak and Dexter like Joe said. That's a franchise that desperately needs another entry.

An Uncharted 4 on the PS4 would be good, and would be worth it, but a new IP would be fine with me too.

How about Uncharted 4 with Jak instead of Drake as the lead.

The engine naughty dog used on the PS3 was really impressive and was so well optimised that it produced the best graphics this generation. Far beyond what appeared on the 360. With that in mind I can only dream what they will be capable of doing on PS4. A highly optimised engine on PS4 should provide incredible visuals without even puching the hardware.

Crash Bandicoot or Jak and Daxtar would make me happy, I think they need to leave it a few years before bringing back Uncharted.

Crash is an Activision IP so there is no chance of Naughty Dog making a new Crash right now

I doubt Crash could even walk straight after Activision have had their grubby paws on him either.

Since the PSone I think Crash has been passed around a few people I though Konami had it at one stage. Surprised they didnt put Crash is Skylanders.

SCE, Universal Interactive Studios, Konami, Vivendi, Siera Entertainment and Activision have all had publishing rights to Crash

Jak and Daxter and Crash are both meh games, Uncharted and TLOU are the only games ND have going for them.

Jak and Daxter anything BUT "meh" games. "Meh" games don't make 5 title series or deserve HD remakes. "Meh" games would never sell 13+ million copies combined. And I don't count "The Lost Frontier" - it would give 1 more title and 1 more million copies sold...

No worries, Cod is still a meh game and sold tons more than Jak & Daxter.

Um....yay for those who like Uncharted I guess. Tomb Raider blew it away and just not feeling Last of Us yet since it looks like a reskinned Uncharted.
