Thursday Chat, June 6

Yesterday in our The Last of Us Review we said that the game had "One of the best stories in video game history." Some people say that was perhaps strong words, so today's chat topic is all about stories in videogames.

What game provided the greatest story in your opinion? What is your classic and best story ever?

Let's Chat!

It's subjective though isn't it? like any review. I hope the story is great. I love a good gut punching story. Spec Ops always tops my list nowadays. There are a few that I love, Infamous is definitely one. I love the idea of a super-hero "origins" story that isn't based on a marvel or DC character.

Spec Ops the line amazing story, tomb raider "reborn" amazing story! old final fantasy games (VII VIII IX X) had interesting stories which i could play every day! story for me is the main thing, if it isnt interesting, its boring in my opinion! take story over graphics anyday of the week!

@ shep yep I agree with you story always has to be the most important & then gameplay. People focus to much on graphics these day & I don't tho why. The story of an game & gameplay is what makes an game for the most part in the first place

The only thing that ruined FFVII for me was the graphics, especially on a bigger screen, they just look bad. FFVI graphics were fine due to their limitations and FFVIII were fine, just 7 seems to be in a hole that lets it down a bit. The storyline has to be important really, if you don't feel the story is going anywhere then it lets down the overall game structure. Like I hate the fact Vanquish has a bad storyline, because the gameplay holds up with the best out there, but you're doing it just to get through stages rather than doing it for anything else.

I know, after thinking about it, only the last parts had a good story. Also the ending is great

Some lesser games like Binary Domain had good Stories. I think if a story is good and engaging you can let the mechanics and graphics off a bit but if a game has a poor story then gameplay and graphics need to be good.

i would say only the last couple of hours of red dead kept me going! hoping GTA V has a good story with it! really is the most important thing for a game to have for me, else i just get fed up and trade it in or let it rot

Lost odyssey was really good in all factors but the story was grand & deep it so deserves an 2nd game. Wasn't final fantasy 12 that online one for xbox 360 that was pretty bad gameplay wise in my opinion.

I love a good story, but graphics are important. It doesn't matter how good the story is if my eyes feel like they are getting raped, but at the same time I haven't finished Far Cry 3 because the story pissed me off and I loved the graphics in that.

FF7 can't have a HD remake, it would be a full graphical rebuild from the ground up. Might as well release FF15 with the FF7 story

Square said until they've eclipsed the fanfare that FFVII got with a FF game that they believe is much better, then they won't release a HD remake.

Stories are the new graphics, in that the masses care about them more than gameplay. A good story is nice, but gameplay is king, always has been, always will be, it's just wrong that games like Bioshock Infinite (the story of which fell apart a bit at the end for anyone with a half decent knowledge of scifi tropes) and Metro Last Light get rave reviews when the gameplay is only average.
troublemaker's avatar
troublemaker 4 years ago
It has to be a balance. Average gameplay but excellent story works for me. poor gameplay would piss me off. Shifting you through the story with solid but samey shooting (bioshock) doesn't bother me so long as the story is great. Which Bioshock's was. the ending fell apart a bit for me but the themes and storytelling were all fantastic.
Dead's avatar
Dead 4 years ago
I agree up to a point about a balance, but if the gameplay is good enough it doesn't matter how good the story is, or if it even has one.
troublemaker's avatar

Call of duty has been selling on that exact premise for years. Personally, if a game has no story, I don't have a problem playing it. What i have, is a problem picking it up again if I stop. with no reason to see it to the end, I just can't be bothered.

Well I have enjoyed many games because of their stories. Warcraft III! Now this game was so interesting, that I couldn't put it down until I finished it. From the recent games I liked Alan Wake a lot. Awesome storytelling. It makes you feel that you are reading a book. And then there is Dark Souls. Not much of a story, but they way it is presented is what makes it so good. You are discovering the story for yourself, by talking to the NPCs, by exploring new areas. Makes you want to know more about the world, you want to know how it was when those abandoned cities were thriving with people. Just awesome. :) The Witcher, great game, with a lot of lore. The multiple storylines, the narrative itself. It is amazing. Halo sage. Yes, straight forward story, and all. But the "relationship" between Master Chief and Cortana. You can almost feel the connection between them. Halo 4 was probably the best game that presented the human-A.I. connection. There are many other games with awesome stories. I just can't think of them all at the moment (I have played a lot of games :D )

obviously the gameplay has to be there else u hate the game, graphics to me are not as important as decent gameplay and an amazing story, if its amazing gameplay and no story i cant enjoy it thats my look on things, i need to enjoy the story and i need to want to see what happens next or im not sold!
Dead's avatar

Why does what happens next have to be a story though, what's wrong with new levels, new enemies, new bosses? Just the excitement and challenge of that should be enough.

depends on the type of game im playing in all fairness, all that youve just stated is all good and keeps you going in most games, but having a nice story that actually makes you feel emotions is a strong thing for me! i love feeling on edge, worried and other emotions when playing something makes it a powerful experience, like im saying this is all just what i love, we are all different! just some of us (me) are better than u lot haha :P

just been playing remember me for 40 min and liking what i have played so far this is a so underrated game, the graphics are excellent and very detailed the slums look dark and creepy , the leapers look creepy (gone insane by memory wipes) the fighting is not as bad as i thought it would be its like batman and creating combos is addictive and you can dodge with one button , platforming is basic but you dont mind it , overall very good glad i brought it , if your on the fence about it just try it. its not bad as some reviews have said

Got the rental coming in (hopefully arriving tomorrow) and I've got the house to myself for 6-7 hours Saturday. Hoping to take a big chunk outta it then. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If it turns out to be great, I'll gladly eat my words and support the game with a buy. We shall see.

Anyone else noticed IGN story that Game Informer Magazine subscribers have managed to download the latest edition front cover of the magazine early using their android phones, which shows Respawn's new game Titanfall which is coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC. Although the Xbox 360 version is being developed by another studio according to this IGN article. The front cover includes a woman with a hand gun shooting what looks like a huge robot.

I loved FFVII, but looking back the story wasn't that outstanding - it was the way it was told that made it special. A lot of my favourite games actually didn't have great stories - but I'd have to say Starcraft still stands up. Bioshock and Modern Warfare are also up there for me.

In terms of unparalleled scope and complexity I would have to go for Metal Gear Solid 2. MGS3 was such a let-down after that, but I guess they had no way to top it. I also really like Limbo, for flying in the face of the current trend with its almost non-existant story, which has much more impact than the low-quality, token, throwaway plots of 99% of games. I can really only think of a handful of videogames with good stories, Silent Hill 2 is one, Xenogears is another. There really aren't many. Most stories are just padding which gets in the way. Really looking forward to The Last of Us.

oooh it's a tough one. Nier is up there as one, Okami too. Fire Emblems mostly get good stories out too. As did Persona 4. Suikoden is edging near the top too as one of the ones where I nearly cried at the ending.... But the honour has to go to the Mother franchise. Earthbound had a simple story but was underlying with tons of tones that seperates it from pretty much everything else. But Mother 3's was exceptional. From what I've gathered the creator has had people write/come up to him in the street and thank him for changing their lives, or people saying just how much more they appreciate their families after playing the game etc.
