PS Camera was dumped from PS4 box to make price cheaper

The PlayStation 4 camera was originally meant to be bundled with every PS4, however in order to knock $100 off the original price of $499 and therefore gain an advantage over the Xbox One, Sony decided to drop the camera.

According to IGN, Sony only recently told retail partners the camera would not be included, but never specified a lower price point in order not to tip off Microsoft before its own reveal.

Obviously this means that extra functions of the Dualshock 4 will now be entirely optional, although it does give consumers both a cheaper price and a choice as to whether they want the camera or not, rather than it being forced upon them ala Xbox One.

So what do you think? Do you prefer the choice?

so they had planned to do what MS have done! but i suppose at least they did the right thing in taking it out and making it optional!

The question has to be, did they originally plan to have the camera as a MANDATORY accessory? ie, the machine wouldn't turn on without it plugged in? Considering they were touting the DS4 lightbar thingy early on, it was obvious the eye was gonna be a big part of it. but this makes it sound like it was, at least, optional.

Maybe Kinect is just another switch for MS to flip

i think MS may drop this kinect is needed! but then i come to my senses and realise that will never happen! for the simple fact they have made the console NEED it, wankers, still getting both so i dont care

I think new PSEye was optional from very beginning since console bundled with mono headset and every DS4 have port for it. Also, even without use of lightbar every DS4 have motion control thingy similar to DS3 - it will still work without camera if needed.

Sony did the right thing, because some ppl may not want PS4Eye and Sony is giving those ppl the option, since PS4Eye is optional AKA you don't need to own one for your PS4 work. The PS4 is only $460 with PS4EYE, so still $40 cheaper + PS4 come with a Mono Ear plug (Headset)

Nothing but underhand tricks from Sony. I bet the patent for DRM was to lead Microsoft in that direction. I bet Microsoft now will release a Xbox ONE without the Kinect - preferably 2 bundles (although after official launch will be best so Kinect gets full support), I am sure that the Kinect does not have to be necessary (especially after an update). What would be better is releasing 2 bundles, one with the eye and one without, but If the eye is not included, now there will be less support for it, unlike the Kinect. Right now there are no games that interest me on the PS4, but should be after a year or so. It would have been best to release the PS4 with the EYE, so the EYE gets more support, and if they release the PS4 without the EYE next year then could have bought the cheaper version without the EYE but more likely purchase the EYE later as more games would likely support it, but now It is not bundled then there will probably be little reason to get one at all.

Kinect should be optional. But you what sucks the most? That you will need to buy a separate Kinect device so you can develop applications for Windows using the official SDK. And you will need to pay $400 (or euros) to do that. Seriosuly? I have done some work with Kinect before (Kinect for Xbox) and I would really like to improve the application that I have developed (maybe even publish them), but like this... What, I will need to have 2 Kinects? (if I buy Xbox ONE that is, which at this point is not likely) FYI the Kinect for Windows SDK allows you to work with Kinect for Xbox, but if you want to release an app you will have to support only Kinect for Windows devices (no Kinect for Xbox). Which is why you don't have any Kinect game/app for Windows.

Sony should concentrate on displaying more games at E3 than playing silly games with MS. First DRM and now this. This move and them actually admitting they only did this move to mess with MS has seriously put me off Sony and the PS4, I may not even get one at all now. MS will most likely release a Xbox ONE without Kinect, but at least it means Kinect has potential for more support than the EYE now. History has proven that add ons that get released after launch, do not get the support and some completely fail, eg PS2s HDD, N64 64DD, N64 memory unit (was supported but would have been more supported if machine had that extra memory in each and every console), and same goes for PS3 MOVE and 360s Kinect. However bundle everything at launch, then it all gets supported, and can be downsized and release cheaper bundles. If people want to buy games with Kinect then have to spend extra and get Kinect.

Tony your missing the point not everyone wants an ps eye for ps4 or kinect for the xbox one. People like to have the choice to decide if they would like to get eva not be forced it so sony are doing the right move by giving fellow gamers the choice. Ms did when kinect first came out for the xbox 360 but now there forcing you to have kinect for the one witch is an silly move.

You do know that E3 is long over right? Sony have said they saved some stuff for Gamescom in August. That will be the place for games. Ofcourse sony are going to play games, that what businesses do. they are in it to make money and if they spot a good business move (which this was, doesn't matter how you cut it) they will do it. Same as it was a good business decision for MS to drop the DRM and phone home shit that they had. The eye is not going to be a post launch item. it was supposed to be in the box, how is that post launch? It'll get plenty of support, but it won't me a mandatory addition to your machine that will prevent it from turning on if it's unplugged, something the kinect will be. And that's not something I see MS changing, they are too heavily invested in their tech.

I have no idea how it can put you off Sony when they took it out to make the console cheaper for the consumer. My mind boggles.

They made it cheaper but it means that the EYE will not get so supported and will turn into another defunct product taking away awesome possibilities. BUT they still could have done one bundle which has has EYE, other bundle has no EYE - That is choice, allows people to still buy a cheaper version and ensures the EYE gets full support. The way they are doing is forcing people to buy one without the EYE. I did not hate PS4 before the replies after my first post here, it just had no games, but the defence of this is sickening. Sony have admitted to including the EYE to make MS think it is OK to bundle the Kinect. The same with the DRM. MS only did these things because they thought Sony was going to do it too. Now Sony have not gone trough with it, they have to change things around, and mess people about. Who is going to notice Gamescom? I only knew about it from visiting here. EVERYONE knows E3. The majority of games would been shown at E3 I would have though, with one or two left for Gamescom.

Who wants the Eye supported? And they are doing one bundle with the Eye in and one without the eye, hence why one with Knack and the Eye is being touted about the internet just now. Sony have admitted to having the Eye in, but then wanting to lower the cost they took it out but never told the retailers the price was going down just so Microsoft couldn't change their price, which is perfectly fine. MS were doing these things because they thought it was the right thing to do, but they realised with the backlash that they received that they were not, stop blaming Sony for MS mistakes. Everyone who knows E3 knows Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show etc. Majority of games being shown at E3? Sony have confirmed they have more games to show at Gamescom. Don't just guess 'one or two'

Absolutely the right thing to do. Shit like that should always be optional. ALWAYS! Also got a great laugh out of TONY's hilariously petulant posts. Sounds like someone's having trouble coming to terms with Sony outmaneuvering MS at every turn so far heading into next gen :D

There is a war between Sony and Microsoft, and it is just going to explode leaving everyone in tears. Sony's actions have been rather unprofessional. It may be cool for them to do a video and make MS look like idiots but it is unprofessional, and the same goes here for admitting they did not want to tip MS hand. At the start I did not want any console, but seeing the games come for Xbox ONE blew me away, even with the DRM, but all this is just making the next gen too much, and I may not even get a Xbox ONE either now, but MS are being more professional about it. EA openly stated they wanted one of Activisions franchises to die in 2011, and then they release SWTOR and it fails to maintain millions of subs. The gaming industry is becoming too arrogant, trying to cut corners and end up failing. Sony have not outmanouevered MS yet, not until the PS4 has more awesome games than Xbox ONE. Nintendo are the only ones keeping any credibility as they are staying out of it, and keeping their heads down and creating awesome games. As for Gamescon,.E3 is the only one that EVERYONE cares about, the other places like Gamescon are not as well known at all, only those who follow every game show around. E3 is the one where it MAINLY matters, and E3 is where they SHOULD have shown the majority of PS4 games with one or two at Gamescon.
