Sony not planning to abandon PS3 any time soon

Sony Japan president Hiroshi Kawano has that the company has no plans to abandon the PlayStation 3.

Generally Sony consoles have a 10 year lifecycle and with the PS3 only being seven years old it could be said the best is yet to come. In fact PS3 only just recently got one of its best ever games in The Last of Us and the rest of this year's line up is looking just as good thanks to titles such as Beyond: Two Souls, Gran Turismo 6 and The Puppeteer.

"It's been seven years since the release of the PS3," Kawano told Famitsu magazine, "and the console continues to sell at a constant pace, plus we have many upcoming titles. We have no intention of immediately shifting from the PS3 to the PS4."

According to Kawano, it may be the cloud service which eventually sees "some people [switching] consoles from the PS3 to the PS4." thanks to its ability to allow users to play PS3 games, although he says any switch "will be a gradual process."

To say "we're releasing a new console, so trade in your old ones for it would be a maker's ego talking, plain and simple," Kawano concluded.

Well I knew they wouldn't there's so much life left in the ps3 plus it gives devs the choice to work on the ps3 or ps4 for there games. So I see this as an good move.

I'll mainly be paying attention to any BIG games on PS3 that doesn't come out on PS4, or my PSplus keeps getting updated for it. It'll sit in my room for my girlfriend too, which wil be either our nighttime Blu-ray player or just her console.

Lot of life left in the PS3 it seems, as even after 2013 there's apparently some big releases left to come for it. That last (Yes!) FFXIII sequel is early 2014 I believe, and supposedly Littlebigplanet 3 is next year as well on PS3 (Though possibly it'll be cross gen). Plus I believe it was heavily implied Bandai Namco's next "Tales of..." title was a PS3 release. Probably others I'm forgetting (Last Guardian is likely a lost cause at this point).

I am not getting rid of my PS3, since I may end up a month without a PS4 game and then I can play PS3

Nothing coming out for the PS4 so no reason to get rid of the PS3 until next year yet.

Usually it takes a year or so to get them. Or in the PS3's case it took about 3 years before any really good ones came out.

Another reason not to rush getting a PS4 (or Xbox ONE). They are only saying the consoles are going to be supported so they will still sell, but if the next gen consoles take off, the PS3 and Xbox 360 will get less and less supported faster. It will not be supported forever, so best get the most out of the PS3 and Xbox 360 before focussing on the next gen. There is plenty more time to play PS4 and Xbox ONE. If there are games in your collection you have not touched yet, it will be annoying if you finally get around to play a game in 5 years time, and fully enjoy it, but unable to download the DLC for it, as the closed down the servers for them. There is plenty time to play PS4 and Xbox ONE games, but may not have that long for PS3 and Xbox 360, unless PS4 and Xbox ONE totally fail. Previous consoles you could easily stuff in a cupboard, and leave indefinitely, as they did not have much DLC if any, but not PS3 or Xbox 360 games (ones that you have not yet got the DLC for) - you can no longer get the DLC for original Xbox games. When they announced they were turning off the Xbox servers, I spent ages going through my collection downloading all the DLC, but with Xbox 360 it will be almost impossible as I have way more games for it, and the DLC is mostly not free, whereas original Xbox DLC was. It will be easier with PS3 though, as I only have the exclusives, so could get through them, then sell the PS3.

I need to know when to get my reserve PS3... It's my favourite console ever think I will play it for years. Might have to make my own in 50 years time though!

Tony any DLC or games that you have bought are on your download history that includes ones no longer on the marketplace and you can redownload them from there. For example i could go on and redownload the marvel ultimate alliance dlc even though its no longer there.
