PS3 was UK's best selling console in June

Is the tide turning? PlayStation PS3 was the best selling console in the UK last month, while more PS3 titles sold more last month than on any other platform.

Overall Sony had a share 40 per cent of the market in terms of software, although this success was largely down to PS3 exclusive, The Last of Us.

Still, it's interesting to see that the console sold more than any other, especially since Xbox 360 generally dominates in the UK. Could this be a sign of things to come in the next generation or is it a one off in an otherwise Xbox 360 dominated year? Only time will tell.

Yup, Last of Us has been tearing retail a new one worldwide it appears. Number 1 in every EU chart for the 5th week running now.

This is definitely a sign of things to come IMO. MS have messed everyone around too much and people are getting fed up. Still the biggest driver is the £80 price difference on the next gen, MS has got A OT of catching up to do already. A personal case study, myself and 4 friends are regular gamers, all 5 of us had the 360 as our primary console this gen, all 5 of us have pre-ordered the PS4 and shunned the Xbone because of the horrendous way MS is handling itself and it's consumers. I have ordered mine from a local independent shop and after a chat with the owner he said that the interest in the Xbone has been negligible, yet the PS4 has had countless people asking the questions and pre-ordering. Unless Sony really screw things up a lot of MS' market share is there for the taking. We'll see, this can only be good for gamers IMO.

What a shame they aren't doing so well in the handheld market ;)

I actually wonder, if the reason 360 actually did well, was because it had 1 year without competition and only place to get Tales of Vesperia in the west.

I would have thought most people who wanted an Xbox 360 would have one by now, and with the Xbox One out in a few months maybe people are waiting for that.

That same logic applies to PS3 users too.

There were a fair few PS3s sold specifically because of TLOU this month

" What a shame they aren't doing so well in the handheld market ;) ” - Given how quickly the dedicated handheld console market is declining everywhere except Japan thanks to smartphones and tablets, no one is going to be doing too well in that already minor corner of the industry soon enough. This is especially bad news for Nintendo, who are already on the fast track to being a handheld only company right now. Make no mistake, handheld consoles are much less relevant today than they would have been only 5 years ago.

It's quite interesting to see the differences I think. I think I read that the 3DS was top in US and obviously it is in Japan last month.

Yawn, morons keep insisting mobiles are killing the handheld market, 3DS keeps selling like hot cakes. Also, what happened to David, did he get a brain transplant?

Well, considering the 3DS is nowhere close to being as popular as the DS was and is showing demonstrable year on year declines in hardware sales(Even in Japan I believe) and the Wii U has been DOA worldwide, it's pretty obvious the casual market that was carrying Nintendo last gen has abandoned them en masse, so they must have gone somewhere else, and the only logical place they could have gone is to mobile and Tablet gaming judging by the current state of the market. The 3DS is doing well enough if viewed in isolation of course, but it damn sure isn't "selling like hotcakes".

The ps3 wasnt as popular as the ps2 does that mean that people arent buying consoles anymore?

Yeah, top 10 selling games all year, that's really being abandoned en masse. Go home kevin, you're drunk.

Zombie, actually there is a lot of evidence to support the idea that console sales in general are in contraction... whether this is a result of so-called "generation fatigue" or a sign of a wider shift by the industry away from dedicated hardware remains to be seen, but my point was that Nintendo consoles don't sell nearly as well as they used to, as the casual gamer market simply has too many cheaper and better options for gaming available to be paying hundreds of pounds just to play Mario games. And Gloria, being "top ten" software is a pretty empty achievement when total combined software sales for all Nintendo consoles for 2013 to date are barely half the total sold on either PS3 or 360 for the same period.

Hmmm, having to add together all the sales of multiplatform dross that you get on the 360/PS3 to better Nintendo software sales isn't really proving any point other than how desperate you are to attack Nintendo kevin.

Granted the Wii U isnt really doing well just just now but that doesnt mean that it wont pick up. When you look at the amount of big exclusives this year Nintendo still has the most so far.

Also 3DS is close to being on par with the DS http://metro.co.uk/2013/04/18/3ds-sales-1-million-ahead-of-ds-record-in-u-s-3639544/

There's plenty of that "dross" as you call it coming out on Nintendo platforms also Gloria, in addition to a number of high profile Nintendo first party releases, so in this instance such sales stats are actually quite a good indicator of the current gaming landscape. Zombie, I'm not claiming the Wii U definitely won't pick up to some degree, but the state it's currently in is going to take a fairly unprecedented turnaround to fix in any meaningful way, and as long as Nintendo refuses to give the console a significant price cut to go along with the big releases coming in the next few months then any turnaround is likely to be fairly minor. We'll see soon enough though I suppose.

Xbox gamer this gen as are my mates. Have owned a PS3 too as their exclusives are ace but generally used that for just single player. Since the rumours and E3 my Xbox hasn't been switched and am really enjoying the PS3. Picked up a fair few games I wouldn't have otherwise recently along with TLOU and Ni No Kuni. Now have a PS4 on preorder as do all my gamer friends. Collectively swiching to PS4 this gen. Wouldn't rule out picking up an XBONE at some point for exclusives but I am no longer an XBOX Gamer.

That was quick. 3DS is now (and has been for the past few weeks) outselling both PS3 and 360 in the UK. http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/3ds-sales-spike-in-the-uk-pushes-ahead-of-ps3-and-360/0118869? So this would probably be better labelled as Best Selling Home Console in June
