SOCOM and MAG servers to close next year

SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4 and MAG, the online FPS that supported 256-player battles, will all have their servers closed on January 28, 2014, Sony has announced.

Interest is obviously waining on the popular SOCOM series, while Sony's brave attempt at a 256 shooter - MAG - will finally come to an end. MAG was certainly a fairly decent game and had a lot of good ideas, however hope of a sequel seems to be null after Sony shuttered developer Zipper Interactive.

What do you think of this news?

A sad day. With Zipper closed, I guess that spells the end of the SOCOM franchise. Sure, it hadn't hit the quality of SOCOM 2 in a long time, but 4/Special Forces was still pretty fun! Hopefully the MAG servers closing means something similar for PS4, but again, without Zipper Interactive, I don't know how they'll do it. Obviously player count is down and it's not worth the cost, but it's still sad to see these games end.

I would be so happy to see another MAG like game on the PS4. It had so much potential and was quite well executed with some teething problems. But it is still a very good game.

It's a real shame, I have played SOCOM since the very first one. SOCOM 2 was by far the best and they should have released a HD version of it at some point to get sales because I know a lot of people who have the same opinion. SOCOM 3 was ok with vehicles but most of the time it just didn't feel like the classic games. Then SOCOM 4 for me had better graphics but they completely changed the feel of the game which is then destined to fail because the classic players didn't like it and people who have never heard of it were not very interested. SOCOM CONFRONTATION was my favorite game since SOCOM 2 because it felt more like the classic game and had more people on than SOCOM 4. I have always tried to support Zipper but since SOCOM 4, I could see the franchise collapsing from there.
