Xbox One records last five minutes of your gameplay

Xbox One will capture and sharing footage just like it's rival PS4, although Microsoft has confirmed that the console will only record your last five minutes of play, compared to PlayStation 4's 15 minutes.

Speaking during a Pax panel as reported by Gamespot, Microsoft Studios creative director Ken Lobb confirmed the feature.

“The idea is you’re always recording. The last five minutes of any game you’re playing are always being stored on your hard drive.

“Say you’re playing online and you just did the best thing ever – you can’t pause as you’re playing online. You can say ‘Xbox, record that’ and it’ll grab the last 30 seconds of gameplay for you to play around with later.”

So what do you think? Is this one up for PS4 or is it just great to have this feature on both consoles?

Good work anyway. If it can take your 'record that' and you can pin them together, good news really. Obviously PS4's 15 minute is better, but just being able to tell it to record a specific moment is good.

5 minutes of game play? So that's not even a half of FIFA, and less than a 10th of a good game on BF3

It's a great feature for both systems, but clearly the more you can record, the more useful it is. The late mention of this, and the fact that the duration is fairly limited, suggests to me that this was an afterthought on the Xbox One, presumably in reaction to Sony announcing it for PS4. MS also haven't mentioned any custom hardware for doing this, so presumably it will have some impact on system performance while it happens. On the PS4, there's custom hardware for encoding the video and more for uploading it - all done in the background, with no impact on general system performance.

If it was any longer the file would be to big to send to the government :)

To be fair, if you were recording stuff, you could just say after a chance at FIFA 'record xbox' and then peice together the parts you wanted.

To be fair, this is something I would want off anyway. I'd rather the processor worked on more important stuff. I disconnected my PVR a while ago after getting fed up with Youtube policies

Like much about Xbone, this makes no sense at all. Xbone OS has access to three times more system memory and resources than the PS4 OS does, yet the PS4 can cache three times more recorded footage? Where's all that reserved memory being used exactly? Kinect?

Aye, even though I couldn't work it properly, my videos would often get taken down for using the wrong song over the top of it

5 minutes of gameplay but 500 hours of kinect camera recordings

I was under the impression that both XBox and PS4 had 8Gb of system memory.? With PS4 having the slight edge at it beiong GDDR5 RAM as opposed to DDR3.

Sounds cool. Surely though the people that are really into this sort of thing will already have the set up to do it. 15 mins would be better but i only really want it for screenshots.

They both have 8gb of ram but the Xbox one will use 3gb of the ram for the OS and the ps4 will use 1gb for the OS, 5 minutes is a rather strange amount... really not alot at all, they may have an option for if you hook a harddrive you can cap as much as you like the only other option is twitch tv which will cap as much as you like,

I'm guessing the five minutes is only for retro recording, and you can record much longer if you set it off before hand, but you can only go back 5 minutes.

Perhaps Microsoft feel that they don't need as long of a recording time due to the ease of just saying "Xbox record" or whatever. Presumably on PS4 you would have to pause the game or wait until the end to save your recording, no? Either way I can't see myself wanting to upload a huge video, nor can I imagine publishers wanting huge chunks of their games uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, etc. on a regular basis.

Dan; the controller has the 'Share' button to do exactly that, whether the past 15 minutes, or to stream current footage or a combination of the two.

Ah right, I didn't think they'd revealed exactly how that worked. Sounds pretty good then, though not something I'll be using much on either console.

Yeah, I think that Sony and MS are overestimating the number of people who want to make Youtube channels, and this is going to seriously saturate the market that is already full of 13 year olds begging for likes and subs trying to become the next Machinima.

Indeed. But there is a massive market for it, especially with games such as FIFA. But then those are the types of people that have hurt FUT with the videos.

I thought FUT was hurt just because after 6 weeks the market place gets saturated with TOTW Messi people have spend £5,000 on buying packs to sell for millions.

Does Youtube allow 15 minutes for normal user?

5mins is enough, why coz most people get bored of watching game play video after a few mins.
