Thursday Chat, July 25

Games, we all love them. But what type do you love? Are you an RPG player? Do you love FPS? Is it action you are after? or can you not get enough of platforming?

What is it about games that really appeals to you? Do you like the big budget 'AAA' Call of Duties of this world, or do you prefer smaller indie-style titles, e.g Journey, Minecraft?

Let's Chat!

I like almost all games. and I'll generally try almost anything. within reason! If I had to pick a favourite, it'd be any story based/story heavy action/adventure games that comes with a stealth element. even the worst of games can get you on edge with a bit of stealth.

Love a good platformer, either 2D or 3D, other than that am open to most types of games, not really keen on sports games though, or your typical RTS.

I like lots of stuff really the only things I am not a fan of is FPS probably cause I suck at them and never played an MMO

Never played an RPG? I find that hard to believe, the genre has widened so much these days and includes games that you might not think are RPGs.

Action RPGs are my favourite, also like the traditional J-RPGs, story and plot driven games, and a big platformer gamer too. Pretty much the only type of games I don't play are racing games, sports games or mindless FPS like Call of Duty etc...

Joe, your old PSN name lists Dragon Age and Borderlands as being played. Both are RPGs!

I had this exact conversation with Whitey when I added him on Steam, he is a AAA gamer. Platformers and RPGs are my bread and butter & I love Indie games, Bastion, FTL, Offspring Fling & Thomas was Alone, all great games. I find it had to believe you haven't ever played a RPG Tootell, even Bioshock is classed as a RPG

Both not played by me I use to share that profile with my brother

Ohhi have played bioshock infinite, something that does interest me is the look of JRPG'S but I wouldn't know where to start.

Speaking of RPGs, loving Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros, at the 40 hour mark and currently fighting giant Bowser in dreamland, I love the giant boss battles, they are like something out of Power Rangers.

ah I loved Mass Effect 2 and 3; I wasn't even that bothered by the ending to ME3 but then I played it a while after it'd been released and had low expectations for the ending. Haven't played ME1 though as played ME2 on the PS3 before they released ME1 for it and can't be arsed to go back and play ME1 now. Older JRPGs are better than newer ones IMO. Though what I really mean by that is FFXIII sucked ass. Also I may be in the minority but I'm playing Persona 4 at the moment and though it is awesome and very addictive, I enjoyed Persona 3 more. Though that might be because I played it first. Also I'm only 45 hours into Persona 4 so no where near completing it yet so not sure I can form a full opinion yet..

I would say it's near enough a crime not to have played at least Mass Effect 1 this generation. Drop everything you are doing Tootell and go and buy it

At the price the first one is now I wouldn't say no but I hate bullet sponges so I didn't really get along with Borderlands after my first playthrough

It's actually quite difficult to get hold of Mass Effect 1 on the PS3 if you don't want to download it
Samka's avatar
Samka 3 years ago
Ha maybe I'll pickup ME1 sometime in the future... if I can convince my bf to play it as I'm rarely home alone and we generally play all games together (we operate an informal lives/levels/stop hogging the controller system). Will prob d/l a copy if difficult to get a physical version as upgraded the mem on our PS3 a while back so have loads of space. Or I'll probably borrow a copy off my mate (the joys of this gen and all that). Time is always the issue though... my back log of games is so. long. :-/

£60 for it on Amazon and £85 for it on Play.com. You got to love scalpers

If I'd have known that the price would have been so badly inflated, I'd have bought multiple copies when I bought my trilogy for the PS3

Oh and Elsword is finally available in the UK thanks to Steam. Just a heads up for anyone interested

Borderlands is fine, the enemies turn to bullet sponges on your second playthough, true, and some of it is really fucking tough, but it's a game worth playing at least once none the less

£40 for the Asian version on Ebay

Hey, if fucking idiots are willing to pay that kind of money for a copy of a game, then I'm not sure the person taking advantage of that is the problem.

Same thing as people buying tickets and selling them on for double the price
JoeToots's avatar
JoeToots 3 years ago
Just seen the price of the mass effect trilogy I'm not paying that sort of money!
troublemaker's avatar
troublemaker 3 years ago
Not really. Mass effect 1 currently has a digital download for around £15. If you're so desperate to have it on a disc that you are willing to pay £90 for it, then the issue isn't with the guy selling it for that much. If it's not in print anymore, then selling it at an inflated price as a rare collectors item is completely fine. It's no different to selling out of print graphic novels for £100's to collectors
Loli-Nox-Tan's avatar
Loli-Nox-Tan 3 years ago
You don't even get all the DLC
Loli-Nox-Tan's avatar
Loli-Nox-Tan 3 years ago
The problem is that people buy multiple copys just to sell them on later

Never played any of the Mass effect games but did pick up the trilogy box set from CEX last week for £40. Want to get the killzone box set as well but thats hard to come by these days.

Killzone Trilogy (EU) £39.99 GAME. Killzone Trilogy (US) £18.05 Play-Asia
Loli-Nox-Tan's avatar
Loli-Nox-Tan 3 years ago
Then if that's your mindset Brooker why not just buy a load of copys of a limited release and sell them on a year from then
troublemaker's avatar
troublemaker 3 years ago
Because not all limited release stuff makes money a year on. Especially now that most "limited edition" stuff is actually just a day one edition, and even stupid expensive editions are mostly just filled with DLC codes! It's not something I have the time, inclination, or money to get into.
troublemaker's avatar
troublemaker 3 years ago
Worth spending the £40 for the killzone box. US/Asia box looks very flimsy
Bindiana's avatar
Bindiana 3 years ago
Yeah I want the PAL copy I am a bit picky with that stuff would always want the PAL version only get NTSC if the game hasnt been released over here. I am not sure if there are many games this generation that are going to be come rare and expensive to get hold of like some PS1 games now. Like Suikoden 1 and 2 and Castlevania Symphony of the night.

If I have noticed anything it's that the main culprits that scalpers inflate are JRPG's. Look at the Ni No Kuni Wizard Edition, £70 retail and now people are selling it for £120
Loli-Nox-Tan's avatar
Loli-Nox-Tan 3 years ago
Oh & before NISA done another print of Hyperdimension Neptunia scalpers were selling it for £60-£80
troublemaker's avatar
troublemaker 3 years ago
JRPGs generally have a following of the kind of people that not only will gladly spend the money, but frequently do. Ni no kuni is a good example, but another one would be the Killzone 3 helghast edition, was retailing for £100, people stocked up, you can buy it in HMV STILL for £20 it's a crap shoot. £50 inflation isn't much though for the time you put n. once the thing ebays and fees etc are applied it's negligible. the ME trilogy was £40 and now there is at least one listing on play for 400 notes. Now THAT would have been worth buying a few copies for!
Bindiana's avatar
Bindiana 3 years ago
Yeah JRPGs have usually turned out to be the things that are rare probably as not many actually come out here but I think that has changed the last few years
