Xbox LIVE Gold required for Xbox One DVR features; PS Plus not required for PS4 equivalent

It was revealed yesterday [via] that gamers will require an Xbox LIVE Gold account in order to record live video on Xbox One, despite it being built into the system. To us this story was kind of obvious so we didn't report it.

However it has came to light today that the same feature on PS4 will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription with Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirming as much on twitter.

This is one of many benefits non subscribers on PS4 will have over Xbox Gold subscribers, as services such as Netflix, Lovefilm and more are not hidden behind a paywall on PS4, while they are on Xbox One.

So is Sony just being nice to its customers or do Microsoft have it right? It's also interesting to note that Skype is also hidden behind a paywall on Xbox One yet is free to access on PC and even PS Vita, even though Microsoft owns the service.

What do you think of the above?

I don't know anyone who doesn't have Gold really, so it's a mute point. But still, it's mental they'd hide everything. It basically turns it in to a sky box, with the ability to play games.

To be honest, not sure why this comes as news to anyone. How many services do you get on 360 without Gold? Every extra feature and service on Xbox always requires the sub.

I know people who don't have gold because they can't afford it and only buy like 5 games a year, they do all their online stuff during trial weekends which are becoming few and far between. Putting stuff that is a free service behind a paywall is a jerk move. It's even worse when it's for a subscription based service like Lovefilm, Netflix or Sky so people have to pay twice for the convenience.

It's what really annoys me about MS, they really are money grabbers more than most. These services are mean't to be free. If you think £40 for playing online is for you then that's fine, but when you look at PS Plus at the same price you get a lot more for your money.

But people look at it as paying for individual services, you're not paying Gold to record games or use Netflix. You pay the sub to Microsoft to allow you to use all services and features on their console. Yes it would obviously be better to use them without a sub but it's not that expensive really, like £30 for a whole year. Plus people who really want to record without sub can use their own external capture card, which lets face it, if you're serious about recording and streaming, you will probably be using any way.

Or people could buy a PS4 and get Netlix, recording and more for free. That's what it may come down to. MS is shooting itself in the foot. Netflix and the like are becoming more of a big deal. Why pay for them twice on a more expensive system when you can buy the cheaper, more powerful PS4 and get them for free?

Problem with that Whitey, with the inclusion of the blu-ray drive and built in PVR to the Xbone is that you won't be able to use an external cap card to record stuff due to 'piracy'. Same reason you can't use most HDMI PVRs on PS3 currently.

I dont mind having to have gold for somethings but things like netflix and recording should be free the recording facility is something both consoles have been pushing.

I can see it being a big factor or issue with some gamers, but for me personally does not effect me much, mainly because I have a gold sub already, and because I don't use any of the other services on Xbox any way. Sony are looking better and better each week though to be fair, but I have no doubt MS will still do well with Xbox One, I just hate that MS seem to be getting worse. Also Joe, you should get involved in the comments more often, good to see you share your thoughts and opinions on the news :)

My issue with XBL is that Gold used to mean something, to the point they handed out free weekends every 2 months, you got demos early and some other cool stuff. Now it's either you have gold or you might as well not bother connect to the internet.

The current gen is fading off while they focus on the next gen, and the early demos and stuff will probably pick up again, and be in full force on Xbox ONE. The 2 free games per month is awesome. My Gold subscription was just based off the service by itself, and did not know anything about these free games. The PS4 is looking good, now it just needs some worthwhile games to play on it :P That is why I will choose Xbox ONE over PS4.

Wow... can this console actually do ANYTHING without making you pay a subsciption fee? It's certainly not sounding like it.

Yeah, you can play games, watch movies, listen to music, talk to friends and whatever else.

"Talk to friends?", So voice chat no longer requires a Gold subscription over Live then?

It never did require gold to use voice chat, for party chat it does, but 1-1 chat can be done on silver.
