Sony confirms voice recognition for PS4 via PS Camera

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will be able to utilise voice recognition through its new PlayStation Camera.

"We can confirm that PS Camera does allow voice recognition. We will share more details on this shortly," said a PlayStation rep to Eurogamer.

At a recent conference in Las Vegas, Sony revealed that the camera does have certain features which it is yet to talk about to the public.

These features include 'navigational voice commands' and 'facial recognition'.

Sony seems to have played down its own camera for now, opting not to include it with the PS4, despite including PlayStation 4 augmented-reality game The PlayRoom which itself makes use of the PlayStation Camera and DualShock 4 controller.

Sounds like Sony may have another trick up its sleeve. Have you pre-ordered the PS Camera?

So now that PS4 does it as well, I guess all the Sony fanboys who ripped Xbox for it, now think it's a cool feature huh?

Probably only those that WANT to buy it rather than having it forced upon them.......

I will get both and think VR is a pretty cool addition for them both. It never set the world alight with Kinect. Agree with Pastyman72, at least it's a choice for PS4

This just subtract more points from Xbox One, since Sony don't force the Camera upon user

Microsoft don't force voice commands and camera stuff either. Sure, you have to buy it, but no one is making you use it or even plug it in. Yeah you could say it's a waste paying for something you don't really want to use, but it's the only way developers will even bother to use it, bet no one will really want to waste time making camera/voice features for PS4 games knowing hardly anyone will have one. Besides, the Kinect may surprise you and end up using it.

It might make a good coaster for my drink

Nah, the console would suit that better. Plus a cold drink may help with cooling :)

For those fanboys that are seriously saying Sony ripped off anything camera related from Microsoft please take a moment to Google the term "PS2 EyeToy". Sony have been experimenting with this tech for years before Microsoft came along and bought a small company specialising in camera recognition in an attempt to compete and leap frog Sony's research. Typical MS policy - see a competitor developing new tech and buy another small company in the same field in order to compete without having to do their own R&D... I've seen footage on YouTube that's over 10 years old, I think before EyeToy even launched, that shows Sony's R&D department experimenting with controllerless gaming and controllerless and voice based menu navigation. It was something they even demoed briefly during the E3 where they announced the PSEye for PS3 but that version of the XMB it never made it out of the R&D department... You can credit Microsoft with a lot of firsts and big developments in the console space - but trust me Kinect and everything that comes from it is not one of them! Oh and for the record the PS4 will mark the 3rd generation where camera/voice control has been offered as an optional addon to the core console experience, so sorry Xbox fanboys this changes nothing...

Seriously cant we just talk about games instead of getting involved in the whole oh this company done that and this one is better, Really they owe you nothing and they are not going to do any better for you just because you defend them on the internet. They are all just after your money no matter how they try and make it look like they are not it is all any big business is after in the end. It is like a bunch of school children arguing my dad could beat your dad and so on. Anywhoo on topic it is pretty good they are having these features don't know if I will get the camera though maybe at one point but not for launch.

Oh dear, looks like some hurt feelings in camp Microsoft over this. Xbone's checklist of features just seems to errode more and more by the day. - " Microsoft don't force voice commands and camera stuff either. Sure, you have to buy it," - So the camera isn't forced on you, but you're forced to buy it? Makes sense...

Question: How many of you use the Kinect voice recognition feature at the moment? I guess only a small percent of the people. It is nice-to-have feature, but not essential. I understand what Microsoft is trying to do with the integration of Kinect, I really do, but still there are some of us that won't use it. Ever. (I have a Kinect at home and in 2 years, I have used it only twice for gaming. I used it more for development on Windows)

Please describe the nature of the abuse:
