Xbox 360 support to last until 2016

Xbox 360 support will last until 2016 and will receive 100 new game launches.

That's according to Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi who said during the Citi Global Technology Conference yesterday that the Xbox 360 will be phased out in 2016, and added that both it and the Xbox One will happily work together.

“We’re going to continue to invest in Xbox 360,” he said [via], “and the two devices can work in concert. So it’s not like the day we ship Xbox One your 360 won’t work. We’ll continue to support it.

“If you look at 360 that platform lasted for seven to eight years and it’s going to go for another three years. It’s incredibly profitable now in the tail. Some of these things take some time in the launch year in which you invest, and then they they play out over time.

“We’ve seen our Xbox Live subscription service continue to grow. We’re up to 48 million members now. We’re shipping more games than we’ve ever done before. Those are things I look to to say, ‘hey we can grow not just top line revenue but also profitability.’”

I don't think they're going to continue to invest. Perhaps continue to support the games already earmarked for a 360 release (which will continue for a few years) but after that I'm not so convinced. Although we may see smaller game companies produce games for the 360, if Microsoft make it economically viable for them to do so. So hopefully some innovative games can get themselves on a console

Unless they use the last few days of support to brick all the consoles i don't care, as long as I can play the games I have offline.

2016 is not that long, considering both are supposed to be supported. It is only 2 years if it is beginning of 2016 or 3 years if end of 2016. Windows XP was going to be stopped being supported this year, a few months ago, but it got postponed until next year, which could get postponed again. If enough people are still supporting the stuff then they will carry on supporting the stuff. Giving an end date is pointless, but it makes it more real that it will end instead of thinking they will support it forever and ever.

It actually looks like PES and FIFA are fighting for the honour of last ever PS2 game as Konami have announced a PS2 version of PEs 2014 as well.

They're still making Dreamcast games, even SNES games.

Why on earth would they release PS2 games now? Even Sony has discontinued the PS2 now. Waste of development money.

Besides, 3 years is plenty of time for the poor people to get a next-gen console.

You think? You obviously have no idea how bad poverty is in this country.

"Support" of course does not include first party game support.
