Many of Xbox 360's features won't arrive on Xbox One for a 'while'

Many of the Xbox 360's features will not be available for a 'while' on Xbox One according to Microsoft's senior director of product management and planning Albert Penello.

"I think even in the U.S., there’s going to be a lot of stuff that was on 360 that isn’t going to be on Xbox One for a while," Penello told IGN.

“Y’know, it’s an interesting dynamic that you find yourself in with console launches, but particularly when you’re coming from a super mature platform… in the old days of console transitions, the expectation of what would be moving to the next console was basically isolated to games. And if you think about all the stuff we’ve done with Xbox 360 and how much it’s different in the last ten years, you basically have ten years of innovation, ten years of experiences, and then, trying to take that and build an entirely new platform, with new hardware and a new software architecture.

“I mean, I totally understand people’s frustrations, and it’s hard to give an answer beyond the fact that, from my seat, it’s a console transition and this is part and parcel. There’s a lot of things that we’ll talk about in our vision for the product that aren’t going to be there at launch.”

Penello also said that TV will offer similar issues for Microsoft.

"TV, if you want to continue, would be another criticism. We talk a lot about TV and that’s only going to work basically in Japan and the U.S. at launch where you have HDMI-in scenarios, so you’ll say ‘hey, what if I have a terrestrial over the air?

“We won’t have a solution for that right away, but we still sell it as part of the vision. So it’s honest criticism and you’d love to have the new launch be everything that you had before and more, but unfortunately it’s an untenable [proposition].”

Really starting to feel like Microsoft have rushed around to much to keep up with Sony. It's going to be an interesting launch.

You could have a point there. Back in May they was a report by someone saying that Microsoft were 6 months behind Sony so its interesting that they are now releasing a week within each other

Well they rushed the 360 to get the jump on the PS3 and as a result it was susceptible to critical hardware failures (RROD) and lacked high capacity storage when everyone knew it should have had HD-DVD built in and have been launched (minus RROD) either at the same time or after the PS3. The above statement is a terrible thing for a MS employee to say - it's as if they are saying "We know you're going to be disappointed with the Xbox One, but keep buying it anyway for the 'vision' and one day we'll be able to achieve that vision" - he sounds like one of those dodgy time-share salesmen you get on holiday!

Its hard to say without knowing what features will not be coming across.

everyone goes on about RROD, yet its still in a minority. you forget the PS3 has similar issues with "YLOD", failure rates were very close between the two. but as with everything it seems that microsoft got the pointy end of the stick. personally, one xbox for 6 Years, three PS3s in the last two years.

People mention RROD because it was a more common problem. The original 360s were built for an expected lifespan of 18 months - some people got lucky and theirs lasted well past that, but some had to re-buy many times. After the first couple of years the new 360s we're built to last longer so it became less of an issue ( and the new gen machines look like they have proper build quality too). I'm not sure the exact numbers for PS3, but the average lifespan of that console was 2-3 times the original 360s (had one that lasted over 6 years)

It really just depended on your luck I know more people with broken PS3s than 360.

I've been lucky as have 2 PS3s and one has lasted 6 years, the other 3 years and both still going strong. They have survived several house moves and one even survived a naughty cat who when he was a kitten got pissed off with all the attention me and my boyfriend were giving the tv during a particularly long session on Pixel Junk Monsters and decided his revenge was to do a dirty protest round the back of the tv. not pleasant. also as for 360 I agree with ASC, quality/longevity *was* an issue at the beginning, and unfortunately with consumers that kind of rep takes a long time to get rid of

Its so amusing to read the threads that follow any articles on the new systems. They always turn out to be seedy dumping grounds for fanboys to have a pop at the other persons preference! Lets face it, nether Sony or Microsoft are going to fail in any spectacular fashion. Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses, some would argue more than others. Both companies are coming from a strong background and user base. Until both consoles are here and can be compared side by side; eerything that is said is supposition. We simply dont know. Im sure that both systems will be great and each will attract their own fans and loyal followers. However, I would agree that microsoft are treading on thin ice assuming that their fanbase/uerbase is prepared to accept a machine that will not do many of the things that they have 'trumpeted' about. From the original and contreversial reveal many people were saying "why not just stick to games". Therefore, if the system architecture is in place to run the games software at launch and not the other elements, why shout about them so lound in the first instance? I look forward to a new generation and how each machine deveops over time. This is just the begining.....(again).....

This is pure speculation, but I think MS were wanting to release next year, but when Sony announced their console they didn't want to lose a year of sales, so rushed it through.

The problem for Microsoft is that, they could lose the "console War" by releasing say 3 months after Sony. Just look ad PS3 vs Xbox 360 - PS3 release 1 year after 360 and still manage to outsell it in the end

The thing that annoys me, is this Albert Penello makes it sound like they have only been designing and building the X1 for the past 6 months.

What features exactly are they talking about? I can't really think of anything worth carrying over.

Well I guess that could be an issue for some people. For me though, I have a computer for internet, music, films, social media stuff and what not. Only thing I want a console for is games so as long as it plays games I'm ok.
