New Wii U firmware rolling out now

Nintendo is rolling out a new Wii U system update which adds the ability to output video and sound to the Wii U GamePad when using Wii Mode.

What this means in simple terms is that you'll be able to play Wii games on your Wii U GamePad while your TV is switched off.

The catch, and we guess it's a big one, is that you'll still need the Wiimote to control the game.

Also added in the latest update is the ability to share screenshots to social networks, support for USB keyboards and the ability to automatically receive recommended software and demos from Nintendo using SpotPass.

Check out Nintendo's website for more.

The WiiU update sounds like a good idea but will probably only work for a handful of titles. Anything where you have to use the Wiimote as a pointer would just be ridiculous. I don't know much about the update but they really need to add WiiU controller functionality for the games that could handle it (basically anything that doesn't require a pointer) - Smash Bros would be nice!

THat would require them to update the actual games though would it not Kevin and I am not too sure if the Wii actually done that. I can never remember updating the game it was always just system updates for the console itself.

But surely Left is Left and Right is Right? Just like third party controllers for the PS3 etc - they just work. All the controls are possible on a WiiU controller with the exception of anything that requires you to point at the screen. I don't see that you'd need to update the games specifically, just an update within the WiiU that transfers the Wii controller setups to the WiiU controller. I'm sure there's a logistical problem as to why they can't do it but I don't understand why. :0/

In fact, thinking about it, you could replicate pointing at the screen by using the WiiU touchscreen. Couldn't you?

Gamepad has a sensor bar built in the top of it. So yeah the motion games work fine. Not bothered about this myself. I just hope that Nintendo use the spot pass feature to force the W101 demo on people so it gets more attention
