Need for Speed making the shift to EA Sports

Update: EA has told MCV that Need for Speed has NOT become an EA Sports game, blaming "confusion" for the previous claim in Polygon's article. Matt Bilbey will be involved with the game, though.

EA has revealed that it's to move Need For Speed under the EA Sports banner, as the company undergoes a structural shift.

Speaking in an interview with Polygon, Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President of EA Studios, said that he hopes these changes will give a new sense of life to the series.

"When you’ve had a franchise that’s been going on for 20 years like Need for Speed, I think it was time for us to get a different pair of eyes on it, a fresh look and feel on it," he said.

Currently Matt Bilbey oversees several EA Sports titles, including FIFA, UFC and NHL, so when it comes to those 'fresh eyes,' Soderland is no doubt looking in his direction.

"It’s a way for us to push innovation and push a different creative brain or mindset onto Need for Speed," Soderland explained.

Given that Need for Speed is being moved to sports, it does raise questions on whether we will ever again see the return of any of the other driving games under the EA umbrella, such as the long lusted after sequel to Burnout Paradise which perhaps would not fit the EA Sports label.
