Sony UK aiming for "as close to zero percent failure rate as possible" with PS4 launch

Sony UK has said that it's aiming for a failure rate down to as close to zero per cent as possible with it's UK PS4 launch.

Speaking to Eurogamer ahead of the consoles arrival tonight, UK boss Fergal Gara told the site that it has used the gap in release between the U.S and UK to iron out a few small issues.

"Any gamer who's disappointed is a problem we take seriously. We are looking into causes of those low level problems - and there are certain learnings that have already been taken which means we can potentially further reduce that low level down to as close to zero as we can possibly get it.

"But let's be clear: the failure rate on PS4 is well within the region we see on PS3, which is considered a pretty bullet-proof machine. There is no evidence there to cause panic either for us or for gamers having any lack of confidence in picking up a PS4."

If for some reason you do have an issue with the machine, Sony has kept some back, so that it can offer a speedy replacement.

"One thing we've done within our stock allocation is make sure we've got a pool of stock to deal with any 'dead on arrival' issues," he said.

"It's not a vast volume, because there's no evidence to suggest we need a vast volume to deal with that. But our consumer services helpline is there to support gamers and solve any problems that do emerge.

"[There has been] no major panic or changes required, but little bits of fine-tuning, not just on our side but also on the publishers' side, So, some small little glitches on some games that can be ironed out, patched and tweaked before it comes into Europe."

Gara added that when it comes to launches and the problems that can occur, "It's a privilege to go first," there are actually "quite a few advantages of going second." Either way, he seems pretty confident that this launch will go off quite smoothly.

Shouldn't every company aim for a fail rate of 0%? Any company that aims for a fail rate higher than that is a bit douchey, imho

There are some advantages to being last I suppose, hopefully any teething problems that happened during the US launch will be ironed out now.

See, I would like to grab one. But I think I'm gonna have to wait till the "Fail Less" version of the console, with bigger memory and a more sensible controller (for both next gen consoles in fact) comes out in a year or two.

Well, you'd hope so, but I think they should do alright seeing as the failure rate so far for the US release has been less than 1% of consoles.

@david - There is a blue light when it first turns on. When you reach the XMB (or whatever the new name is), it turns to white.

Mine worked fine then broke today so if yours works now don't go assuming you missed the failure percentage because you ain't...

I still miss some of the PS3 features on the PS4.PS3 is still needed for owners of PS4 and I suppose that was Sony's thinking.....PS3 is far from dead. I think the Xbox 1 is the better overall console and does what the 360 did and more. Dead Rising 3 an Xbox 1 exclusive is surely and resoundingly a next gen title and Killer Instincts a beat em up game. Compared the bluray players on both ps4 and xbox1 consoles and the PS4 is superior, but PS3 better than both

I prefer the Xbox 360 dashboard layout to the Xbox ONE, which I find to be a mess at the moment, unless there are options I have not yet found, but the games and apps are all stored in the same screen, and there is no order. Maybe later they will create a Games folder in there, so you click "games" and see all your games and not apps as well. Also there is no option to view your games storage management to see where your games are stored, and its saves and DLC, and there is not a way to see how much HDD space you have left. It was said you could plug in an external HDD but I can not see how that will operate at the moment. It is not a problem for now as there is not enough games to fill it up, but may be from 6 months time. I have yet to play a Blu Ray on the Xbox ONE, but found on the PS3 that there was a lot of stutter - could be just my console. I get stutter too on a multi region DVD player, but not my PAL region 2 DVD recorder.
