Original IP's are great, so why do many of them not get the sales numbers they deserve? There are no solid numbers, but it seems Sony owned IP's such as Tearaway, Puppeteer and others don't seem to hit the numbers that the quality suggests they would.

The same goes for many of Sony's original IP's, while games such as Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, FIFA and Battlefield continue to sell each year in the millions without fail. So why is this?

Do people prefer the security of an already established IP? Just why do original games fail? There really are some brilliant titles out there is you take a chance, so why don't people do this?

Let's Chat!

As I've always said, people are stupid, and fear change, they're happy to shell out ever increasing amounts for the same game over and over with little to no improvements to them just to have the latest version of the game all their friends are playing. Then there's the illusion of realism equaling maturity, people want to feel grown up and they want their games to reflect that, so rather than play something bright and colourful and lots of fun they'd rather grind away on tedious grey/brown games in the mistaken belief that it is somehow better.

I think original IPs usually arent given enough promotion take puppeteer its a really good game great art style but Sony didnt really promote it. Other publishers do it as well like EA with Shadows of The Damned and Activision with Singularity. The cynic in me thinks a lot of new IPs are single player so there is not much chance of creating extra revenue with DLC.

Turns out the Xbone DRM wasn't totally removed. http://www.cinemablend.com/m/games/Xbox-One-24-Hour-Check-DRM-Returns-During-Killer-Instinct-Tournament-61114.html

Oppps but first I have heard about it so reckon its not that common occurence. Surprised nobody has tried to hack the PS4 yet to see if they had DRM stuff in it.

It's all down marketing, new ips and sequels to lesser known titles need to be rammed down peoples throats, or one of the established franchises comes out and sucks all the hype out of the average Joe. Also I don't want to start something but why is Battlefield listed? That comes out every other years doesn't it, and is actually pretty good from what I've heard.

I think age ratings have something to do with it as well, I know someone on my friends list who refuses to buy low age rating games as he says 'they are little kid games', but the strangest thing is the few times I've been able to convince him to get a low age rating game, he has loved it.

my moto is if it isn't broken don't fix it.
Joe Toots 4 months ago
If it isn't broke don't fix it, but you can reinforce it to stop it from breaking in the future.

The 'if it isn't broke don't fix it' attitude is symbolic of everything that's wrong with the game industry. If civilization had taken that attitude we would all still be sitting in caves round a fire.

ill play what i want when i want personally if its a new IP it's a new IP if it's a yearly release it's exactly that.
Joe Toots 4 months ago
Enjoy it whilst you've got the choice.

I love new ips always looking for what's new , looking forward to everyone's gone to the rapture , starting to get tired of same old same old , but Zelda and Mario i make an exception as they always feel diffent from the one that came before

I agree with you Joe. I base my choices on 2 things, if it's a new game/IP I check out trailers, gameplay, user reviews (critics with a pinch of salt) or if it's an older game - recommendations (e.g. Ni No Kuni recommended here). I think the problem is like Gloria said, fear of something new. Personally, new is good. Look at Watch_Dogs & The Division

I feel it is the 'hipster' thing to do complain about lack of new IP's i guarantee if it was the other way around and there was a lack of sequels/series's(sorry if thats wrong way of saying it) the same people who are now complaining about lack of new IP's will be complaining about lack of sequels/series's(again sorry LOL).
Joe Toots 4 months ago
I wouldnt call myself a hipster for complaining about lack of new IPs I have just been playing videogames for a long time and like new and fresh ideas.
Bindiana 4 months ago
On a side note the other thing with people complaining about new games e.g. Destiny - "This game look great, release it earlier" and when they do, the same people complain that it buggy as hell
