China promises guidelines for console manufacturers soon

China is set to allow consoles into its country for the first time in year's although as discovered by Bloomberg, there will be certain guidelines to follow.

"Things that are hostile to China, or not in conformity with the outlook of China's government, won't be allowed," said China's Ministry of Culture, Cai Wu during a press conference attended by the site last week.

"We want to open the window a crack to get some fresh air, but we still need a screen to block the flies and mosquitoes."

Seems an interesting way of putting it.

Cai Wu did go on to promise that the guidelines for console manufacturers and game developers would be drafted and released in the near future. Somehow we don't think games such as GTA V and the like will be releasing in China any time soon.

Well, that means that the consoles in China will be region locked (most probably). At the moment there are PAL, NTSC-U, NTSC-J region locks (on Xbox 360 at least). Most of the games are Region free though (you can play a game bought in Europe on your US console). The most obvious way that the Chinese can filter content is to force console manufacturers to provide another region and also to disable consoles from playing region free games. This way the people will not be able to import games from other countries. But, China is a huge market. We will just have to wait.
