PlayStation 4 helps Sony record better than expected third quarter results

Sony’s Game segment recorded sales of $4.2 billion during the third quarter of the 2013 financial year, up to December 31, thanks to 4.2 million PS4's sold and a whopping 126 million in software sales.

Operating income was $172 million, which when compared to the same period last year is up 300 percent.

In total Sony sold 7.8 million PS4 and PS3 systems combined and 2 million combined PSP and PS Vita systems.

PlayStation sales contributed well to Sony Corp as a whole, with the company recording quarterly sales of $22.9 billion and net profits of $257 million.

In addition to the news above, Sony has confirmed plans to sell its PC business – the Vaio brand – to investment firm Japan Industrial Partners, while it also intends to separate its TV business, making it a wholly owned subsidiary by the end of July 2014.

As a result, 5000 employees will lose their jobs by the end of the 2014 financial year.

Sony's Game sector is the only part of the company really making money for Sony. So hardly surprising. Still sad to see the Job losses when other companies are reporting a loss and the higher ups are taking pay cuts to ensure no job losses.
