Phillips wants to ban Wii U in the U.S

Philips wants the Wii U banned from sale in the U.S.

The electronic company is claiming that Nintendo's machine infringes several of the company's patents such as replicating a user's real-life actions in-game and the user interfaces being designed to be navigated by a pointing device.

"Philips has engaged in the field of applied electronics and has conducted research in areas relating to visual representation of spatial processes and to automatic processes," says the lawsuit.

"The present patents-in-suit stem from these fields of research and development and claims protection for an interactive system for which a user can remotely control devices in an intuitive manner. Such intuitive remote control mechanisms are used in present-day home video game consoles."

Philips says that it notified Nintendo of both patents back in November and December 2011 and is now seeking a trial by jury, a ban on the sale of Wii U consoles and other infringing hardware, plus damages.

It's like Samsung vs Apple all over again.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

"interactive system for which a user can remotely control devices" They mean like remote play which was first made available back in 2006? I'm sure there are many others as well. I can't see this having any legitimate grounds to have it banned in all honesty.

@Jonathan Hahaha legendary, I actually laughed out loud. Phillips are stupid, why do so many people hate on Nintendo, poor guys. But to wait this long before calling a trial by jury, Phillips are being silly.

If what Philips say was true, why didn't they try to ban the Wii? the WiiU is just a Wii with a screen in the controller

The Wii was just a Gamecube with motion controls so that means the Wii U is just a Gamecube with motion controls & a a screen in the controller

Wasn't the Gamecube just an N64 with a disk tray too?

Don't know about that but the Wii was a slightly modified Gamecube

The starting point for any console is the one that preceded it.

Starting point yes but the Wii was just a bit too much Gamecube

Everyone wants to sue everyone now a days, perhaps Nintendo did use stuff without permission but this just seems out of the blue.

Seems so pointless by Philips and why wait so long. Wii U has been out for a while now. I doubt anything will come of this.

Everyone seems to try and sue Nintendo for something. And tbh from the sounds of things this sounds like they're trying to sue for what the Wii did.

I'm calling a deal between Nintendo and Phillips here. If Phillips really felt they had a case they would have done this last year. I'm thinking Nintendo are paying Phillips to do this, that way Nintendo is "forced" to abandon the system, and move onto a new project. This way also make it so Nintendo fans who bought the Wii U can't be mad at Nintendo because it wasn't there choice to cease production. In short, the two will settle out of court, with Wii U's discontinuation been a key part of the deal.
