Rare suffers staff layoffs

Microsoft developer Rare has been hit with layoffs after the disappointing performance of motion title, Kinect Sports Rivals.

In a statement released this afternoon the Microsoft wrote, "At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of Rare's commitment to this goal, we have made a decision to change our development process and methodology at Rare to best support our future projects, this has led to us reviewing the skills and the makeup of our development teams in our business.

"Rare continues to invest in our people and future projects."

Eurogamer reports that 16 people have lost their jobs, which seems to be due to the poorly performing Kinect Sports Rivals which only manage to debut in the UK all-formats chart in 14th place and has been in decline ever since.

Good luck to those affected by this news.

They should just let them die and sell off their IPs.

Such a shame it seems Microsoft seems to have ruined Rare made some good games back in the day and all Microsoft got them working on was Kinect stuff and avatar items.

I thought Rare was under Nintendo at one point, they should have just bought them out before Microsoft got them. It's too late now, they should make another Viva Pinata or Banjo Kazooie game, i'd like that.

I havent played them, only played the 1st Red steel and it wasnt very good. Yeah but the wii mote still has buttons i dont mind that and swinging a sword like remote is better than nothing in your hand (kinect), But motion control as a whole is useless to me

The Rare of today are not the Rare of old. Most if not all of the people who were at Rare during their golden age left soon after M$ bought them out

Why the hell don,nt they let them do another Conker game as making games is what Rare is excellent at and not stupid Kinect plop

That's a shame, I hope they do better elsewhere. And YES @Zombie, I have been hoping for a new Viva Pinata game for a long time. There is a lot they could do with it.

They should sell Banjo and Conker back to Nintendo, along with Jet Force Gemini and Blast Corps,

Horrible news. Hope those affected land on their feet somewhere else. “ They should just let them die and sell off their IPs. ” - A truly gross reaction to people losing their jobs.
