Xbox One June update detailed; adds external storage, real names and more

Microsoft has detailed the next system update coming in June, revealing that it'll add in Real names and external storage support, new SmartGlass features and new voice features.

One of the major changes to the Xbox One will be that it'll allow you to use to two external hard drives at once. Simply plug in your 256 GB or larger USB 3.0 external hard drive and once formatted, copy and move games, apps and game add-ons to increase your storage capacity at home.

Microsoft says that this is also a great way to take your content to a friend’s house and get straight into a game directly from an external drive. You’ll need to sign in to Xbox Live if you’ve purchased your content digitally or insert a disc to verify your game ownership when you take your content on the road. But the great benefit here is there’s no need to wait to re-download your game and all the DLC.

Real names are also making an appearance, bringing Xbox One into line with PS4.

In addition, the OneGuide experience and Universal Remote Control is coming to SmartGlass. Now in supported markets you can view all of your TV listings on your SmartGlass device and set and view your favorite channels and app channels on your smart phone, tablet or PC. With the Universal Remote Control, you can also easily switch channels, set new recordings and select and control recorded content from your DVR. Another feature now in SmartGlass is pin reordering. With the touch of your finger you can organize your pins in categories or favorites based on your preferences and have those changes refresh to your console.

Other improvements to SmartGlass add more ways for you to compare achievements. Just like on the console, you can choose to get notifications on your smart phone, PC or tablet when a favourite friend signs into their console or starts broadcasting a game. For many devices, you can even choose to start watching the broadcast wherever you are.

Finally, as well as the ability to choose an account for auto sign-in on Xbox One, the TV and OneGuide features will also be available in June to everyone in Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. The update will bring OneGuide, alongside Favorites and App Channels, for people in these markets who have their TV connected to Xbox One via HDMI-in. Additional features in these markets include Kinect voice commands for controlling your set-top box and other AV equipment. We’ve also updated TV and OneGuide settings to provide better power management and control of your devices and improved compatibility with more devices.

Remember, in June Xbox LIVE changes and Games with Gold arrives, so in this respect a new hub will appear for Xbox One exploring all of the benefits available to Xbox Live Gold members, including Games with Gold and Deals with Gold. Also, with the Xbox Live Gold changes announced last week, shortly after the Xbox One system update becomes available in June all Xbox Live members will be able to access certain gaming and entertainment apps without a Gold membership.

They are doing well with constantly improving as they go. I prefer these monthly updates as well over the big ones every 6 months. Also comes at a good time as I only have 12GB left.

Quite a bit going on this June. I hope this helps the Xbox gather a larger fanbase. The extra store is nice but I usually uninstall games I wont play again.

The real name thing I am not too keen on though. It annoyed me setting up the PS4 as it seemed determined for me to link up all my Facebook stuff.

It's all getting quite interesting with the updates on the Xbox at the moment. I'm not 100% supportive of taking the Kinect out of the box but I understand the logic from business. I just want them to throw the Windows 8 Cortana service into Xbox OS now.

I'm still trying to figure out why, the HDD isn't upgradable, is it because no one bought their overpriced proprietary HDD's for the 360?

Was it not something to do with everyone having the same base hard drive in it so that the possibility of an update being incompatible with other hard drives wouldnt brick them similar to one of the updates for the PS3. I think there reasoning was something along those lines but cant remember where I read that.

it cant really be, as SATA3 is a standard, thus all are compatible. its in the right place to be removable, IF they had added a hole in the side. its either a WD 500Gb or Seagate, i can't remember. plenty of people have opened the X1 and put in bigger disks. the only PITA is the fact that it has like 7 partitions at really random sizes

Didnt think it was true but I do remember reading a silly excuse like that.
