PlayStation is now the World's top selling hardware brand

PlayStation is the top selling hardware brand in gaming for the first time in eight years.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei Business Daily added up the total platform sales for all hardware for the year, including handhelds, and revealed that PlayStation machines sold 18.7m units; Nintendo's machines sold 16.31m units; and Microsoft's machines sold 11.6m units.

This total includes PS4, PS3, PS2, Vita and PSP, Microsoft's Xbox One and Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii U, Wii, 3DS, 2DS, 3DS XL, DSi, DS Lite and DS XL.

The last we heard, Sony's PS4 had sold 7 million units, although that was a few months ago, so there is a good chance that figure now stands at 8 million or perhaps even beyond.

Well done to them. They certainly have made all the right moves. I'll get a PS4 someday. Shame the Microsoft screwed up so bad.

Yup. PS4 is killing it at retail the world over right now and the competition are in significantly weakened positions compared to last gen, so this isn't really a surprise.

Should really read 'worlds annual top selling hardware brand' as it is only counting sales for the year, if we're talking overall it's still Nintendo on top.

PS4's figures continue to be impressive. I just hope they can capitalise on their advantage. After all, Xbox360 had a huge lead over PS3, but lost ground over the lifespan of the two systems. I think everything, as always, will come down to the quality of games, particularly exclusives, that are available. Also wholeheartedly agree with Gloria that Nintendo would most likely come out on top of the all-time bestsellers list :)

Not really a surprise. PS4 has been a huge success since release and probably counts for a large portion of Playstation machines sold. I didn't release there were so many different versions of the DS.

"Should really read 'worlds annual top selling hardware brand' as it is only counting sales for the year, " - It says "is now" in the title though, clearly indicating it is the current top seller. That pretty much says all that needs to be said on the matter for anyone with basic comprehension ability. Though I would be interested to see a source for your numbers showing Nintendo being 'on top' out of curiousity if nothing else. They probably would be, what with being in the console hardware business a lot longer than anyone else and them having released more consoles than Sony and MS combined overall.

Just common sense kevin, as you say they have released more consoles than MS and Sony combined.

But if you can be bothered to add all the figures up here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_million-selling_game_consoles#Home_game_consoles it shows Nintendo with a total of 669.361 million sales, and Sony with 494.79 million. Interestingly MS have only sold 114.7 million , so Nintendo have sold more hardware than Sony and MS put together.

gloria you'll need to find a different source As its own disclaimer states, information on Wikipedia is contributed by anyone who wants to post material, and the expertise of the posters is not taken into consideration. Users may be reading information that is outdated or that has been posted by someone who is not an expert in the field or by someone who wishes to provide misinformation.

Yes, but each one of those figures has a citation for its source. Don't dispute wiki for the sake of wiki, follow up the links for where the information is derived and see if it's factually inaccurate. For the most part, wiki is a great source and starting point for information. Even my University tell me to use it as a starting point for further research

Sony should just go software only

Sony should just go hardware only. All their software gets delayed and delayed and delayed. eg Gran Turismo 5, The Last guardian, Driveclub

Okay, seems I seriously underestimated how much hardware Nintendo have shifted. “What would you rather? They release games that are crap/don't work or games that are great ” - You forget, to Tony, game delays are the single worst thing ever... though strangely it didn't seem to bother him when Halo 5 was delayed by a year... or when Quantum Break got pushed to next year...

Neither Halo 5 or Quantum break got delayed. They never had official release dates or even an official vague estimated timeframe to begin with. Delays are quite common, but with Sony they are not just delayed, but delayed, and delayed and delayed. Most usually delay games by weeks or months, Sony delays games for years, Anything announced by Sony at E3, would not expect release until PS5.

I slightly have to agree with Tony about Halo 5 and Quantum Break not technically being delays. I can see why Halo is as they did say we would be playing Halo on the xbox one in 2014 which made it sound like this year for 5. As long as delays make the game better then I don't mind them.

I fear there's going to be more announcements of delays for both XB1 and PS4 before the year is out but as above, as long as the delay means a better games then I'm ok with that.

I am expecting some of the October games to get delayed as there seems to be a hell of a lot at that time.

The Crew and Destiny are my bet for a delay.

I might be a Sony Fanboy but the old XBox was not included and the PS2, probably the biggest console of alltime was. This makes it heavily skewed seeing as Microsoft doesnt include Handheld consoles to its portfolio. If we were talking last 2 generations I doubt there would be much inbetween them, and Nintendo would take the plaudits due to its outstanding Wii sales

Thats strange that there are some not included, just because of how long Nintendo have been at it as well with all the different handhelds and so on would make them far ahead from the rest.

Just read it was for this year which makes sense as to why some were not included.

I swapped my xbox one for a Ps4 and very glad I did. Xbox one imo os trying to be the psn where the Ps4 is trying to be the 360 in terms of how they are set up to be. However both so called media devices are not that good when they can't play a simple movie from a sub stick lol.

"Neither Halo 5 or Quantum break got delayed. They never had official release dates or even an official vague estimated timeframe to begin with" - Yes they did. At E3 last year when they announced Halo 5 they said it was a holiday 2014 release. Quantum Break was mentioned multiple times in Xbox One PR and interviews around the time of the console's launch as one of the 'many games coming next year'(2014) alongside the likes of Titanfall and Kinect Sports. They may not have given QB a concrete date, but they most definitely pushed it as a 2014 game last year. Also, what Sony games have had multiple delays on PS4 exactly?

Did Driveclub not have multiple delays or was the March/ April timeframe just a rumour?

Driveclub was officially delayed until "early" 2014, then when "early 2014" had arrived, it was postponed indefinitely, and then later officially dated for October. http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/driveclub-officially-delayed-until-2014/0122838 http://www.computerandvideogames.com/434231/driveclub-delayed-to-2014/ Pretty much the same thing happened with Gran Turismo 5. There was about 1-2 weeks of it being released so I go out and get the new slim PS3 to play it, and then did not release for over a year after that.http://www.godisageek.com/2009/08/gran-turismo-5-release-date-revealed/ http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/gran-turismo-5-delayed-again http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-10-13-gt5-has-been-delayed-again http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/gran-turismo-5-delayed + The Last Guardian
