PS4 was the top selling console for May in U.S

PlayStation 4 was once again the top selling console in the U.S for the month, making it the best selling console in the country for the fifth month in a row.

In all total sales rose 52%, led by increases in both hardware and software with Watch Dogs in particular helping to boost sales. Mario Kart 8 also really did well, taking second place in the charts despite being a platform exclusive.

MLB 14: The Show also sold well, coming in at third place for Sony, while Bethesda’s Wolfenstein: The New Order also made its mark.

There is no indication how well the Xbox One or Xbox 360 sold, which is unusual as Microsoft is usually the first to react to the NPD results. Given that the Xbox One goes on sale minus Kinect and at a cheaper price this month, we are guessing that sales where well down for the month of May.

Will Xbox One catch up now that it's cheaper in the U.S? June will be a telling month.

May 2014 Software top ten (new physical retail only)

1.   Watch Dogs – Ubisoft (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
2.   Mario Kart – Nintendo (Wii U)
3.   MLB 14: The Show (PS3, PS4, Vita)
4.   Wolfenstein: The New Order – Bethesda (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
5.   Minecraft – Microsoft/Sony (PS3, Xbox 360)
6.   The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (3DS, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
7.   NBA 2K14 – 2K (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
8.   Titanfall – EA(PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
9.   Kirby Triple Deluxe – Nintendo (3DS)
10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

Microsoft are crazy they have put themselves 6 months behind the rest of the competition due to the pricing structure they have. Absolutely mad although it does look a very decent console when things are going right for it (the amount of defects with the original consoles concerns me though). I still wonder why MLB14 has not be released in this country although it is a very technical game. Question at this point: if you import a game from abroad, can you play it on a UK PS4. I know it works for the PS3 just intrigued if it works for the PS4 too

Just reading up on the sales in the US for the month, and despite MK8 coming out, Wii U sales were around the 60k mark... and so were Vita sales???? In the US at least the Wii U usually sells a notable amount more than the Vita, but during the month it's biggest ever game comes out it sells basically on par? Oh boy...

Really, Prometheus? That's not great news for Nintendo. I actually don't think that the Wii U is necessarily a bad system, but thin support at the beginning seemed to lead to poor sales, which in turn lead to developers dropping planned support, which then hurt sales even further. I'm sure the 1st party games they will be releasing will be superb, but I struggle to see them making a recovery on this system :( It's nice to see the PS4 do so well, however, as I think it's a solid system with great aesthetics :)
