New video shows Mobile graphics looking rather Epic

If the video that follows is anything to go by, then mobile is quickly catching up with console graphics.

Epic's Unreal Engine 4 'Rivalry' project demonstrated at Google I/O shows what's possible when PC-class gaming technologies and performance are brought to mobile devices. In less than three weeks it ported content built for high-end PC and the DirectX 11 graphics API to Android and Google's AEP (Android Extension Pack) extensions for ES 3.1.

Now if only they could sort the controls out.

Whilst the graphic capabilities of mobile devices are catching up, the issue I'm always left with is the manner in which the user interfaces with the game. Perhaps I'm just too old school, but touch screen (as it stands) has its limitations and when I'm playing classic games such as Sonic, it just doesn't have that intuitive, natural feel. Being someone with larger-than-average hands also worsens the problem. If they're going to push mobile gaming, I really hope they find better ways for us to interact with them. These graphics, however, for a mobile device are hugely impressive.

It's really amazing how far these things have progressed. Still, I'd much rather have a controller in my hands than a touchscreen device. They're just not for me.

Jay, do they provide an adaptor or something to attach the phone to the dualshock, thus maintaining its portability?

@jay.hamilton Even then it's still on a smaller screen. There are very few games on mobile devices that interest me, so while that is a good setup for those who enjoy mobile games I doubt it would appeal to me.
