PS4 outsells Xbox One for seventh month in a row in the U.S

Microsoft may have removed Kinect from Xbox One and given it a cheaper price, but it's the PS4 which is still in the lead according to July's NPD results.

PS4 was once again the top-selling hardware, while The Last of Us: Remastered was top-selling software.

The NPD doesn’t give numbers, however what we do know is that's now seven months in a row in which the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One.

Interestingly, PS3 and PS4 combined also outsold Xbox 360 and Xbox One combined when compared to cash spend on Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Microsoft's only comment was that Xbox One is selling “at a strong and steady pace,” with Xbox One sales more than double month-on-month since the console’s price lowered.

As for Nintendo, all we know is that Wii U sales are improving and 3DS is still selling well.

On the software side, Sony announced that PS4 software is outselling Xbox One “by a considerable margin”, and accounts for “more than half of total next generation software sales”.

Here's the top sellers
  1. The Last of Us (PS3, PS4)
  2. Minecraft (PS3, Xbox 360)
  3. FIFA 14 (PS3, PS4, Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  4. Watch Dogs (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
  6. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  7. Grand Theft Auto V (PS3, Xbox 360)
  8. Sniper Elite III (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  9. NBA 2K14 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (3DS, DS, PC, PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
So there we go.

How do you see things playing out the Xmas? Will the Master Chief Edition shift a ton of Xbox One systems for Microsoft and finally see it take back the lead in its home country or will Sony continue to move ahead?

It seems to us that Halo is going to be very important to Microsoft, but will it be enough?

£350 for the kinectless version is not very good value, when only a bit more you can get a game and the kinect in a bundle. Also they do not seem to be selling the kinect device on its own, you can only get it from people selling theirs from the bundle. Future bundles do not have kinect with them either. Both these things makes it seem microsoft have abandoned the kinect completely, so no point buying a kinect bundle for an obsolete device. So not surprising the xb1 is not selling.

Yep, seems removing Kinect did nothing for the console's sales.

Meh, Nintendo have sold more games than Sony and MS put together in Europe this year. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=873824

Uh huh... that's completely irrelevant to a discussion about US sales figures though.

Also, that's only going by first party release sales, and Nintendo put out a lot more titles during the tracked period (January to June) than Sony or MS did. Total software sold per platform for the period paints a very different picture.

It's software sales by publisher, platform is immaterial.

The first price cut was not needed, but the kinectless version needs a price cut now. The Sunset Overdrive and FIFA bundles coming soon may sell more, and with them the kinectless version without a game will have to drop. The limited edition 1TB console is a bit too much especially as it is without kinect. The xb1 is currently a mess while microsoft re-establish the console.

" It's software sales by publisher, platform is immaterial. " - Fair enough I guess, but what isn't immaterial is that Nintendo apparently published twice as many titles in that time period as Sony and MS combined, so it's not exactly a 1-1 comparison, which would actually have been impressive if it was I'll admit.

I suppose it's not really fair on anyone that MS or Sony don't support their hardware as well as Nintendo do theirs.
