Nintendo announce 'New 3DS' coming to Japan, Europe 2015

Nintendo held a Japanese Nintendo Direct today to announce that both the 3DS and the 3DS XL are being revised and updated. Europe will have to wait until 2015 for the updated handheld to reach our shores.

The 'New Nintendo 3DS' and 'New Nintendo 3DS LL' (XL = LL in Japan) are a both a little larger, heavier, has a second analogue stick, coloured face buttons, NFC capabilities and the option of front and back faceplates.

The internals of the device has a had a little refresh too. Both 'New Nintendo 3DS' devices have faster processors, brighter screens and considerably longer battery life. The 'New 3DS' has 3.5 to 6 hours of battery and the 'New 3DS XL' has 3.5 hours to 7 hours too.

Cool, was hoping they'd do one with the circle pad pro incorporated at some point, the NFC and technical upgrade are a nice bonus, will definitely be upgrading to this next year.

Er why???
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
Some truly awful design decisions here. The new shoulder buttons are very awkwardly placed and far too close to the existing L+R buttons and that second analogue "stick" is just terrible looking. Will be interesting to see the pricing here. Oh, and the fact that there will be 3DS games that can only be played on these new models is a monumental piece of dickery on Nintendo's part.
JoeToots 11 months ago
Looks exactly the same to me but then again Nintendo can do no wrong in some peoples eyes.
Gloria 11 months ago
And some people just try to create problems where there are none. The placing of the new buttons and nub are neither uncomfortable or awkward to reach on the current 3DS.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
I think they look terrible personally. I fully expect them to release an add-on to make games like Xenoblade work on the originals. I'll most likely pick one up next year when a branded one releases
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Kinda makes the Smash Bros 3DSXL pointless now doesn't it?
Bindiana 11 months ago
Yeah was thinking of getting an xl think I will wait now till the new one is out.
Gloria 11 months ago
Same.
Reverandjames 11 months ago
I'm pretty sure they wpuld have tested it to see if all the buttons are in the right place and are comfortable. Nintendo aren't amateurs when it comes to comfortable control.
Zombieflamingo 11 months ago
It is pretty rubbish though that some games will no longer be supported on the older 3ds which could cause some confusion.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Bright side! No need to use that ugly Circle Pad add-on
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Though you are trading one evil for another
Bindiana 11 months ago
Yeah the certain games only working on the new one is not good especially if they are still calling it a 3ds xl.
Gloria 11 months ago
They did the same thing with the DSi didn't they?
Zombieflamingo 11 months ago
Don't think so Gloria. I know it had digital games the older versions didnt but cant think of any games that would only play on it. I could be wrong though. I know I will get one anyway.
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
The DSi had a digital store that older DS consoles couldn't access. That was as far as it went. No actual retail games were ever released that only worked on DSi, if they did, then that'd be comparable to what is happening here, but it isn't. At all.
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
“ And some people just try to create problems where there are none. The placing of the new buttons and nub are neither uncomfortable or awkward to reach on the current 3DS. ” - The placing of the nub is the least of it's problems(Though that is still most definitely a problem). It's size and shape are a far more pressing issue... most especially if it ends up having a dead zone as wide as the slider in current 3DS models. And yeah, the placing of those new buttons is awful no matter how you slice it. Barely any space between them and the existing shoulder buttons. The thought of playing anything with the need for an adjustable camera (Such as... oh, for example... Xenoblade) on this makes me wince.
JoeToots 11 months ago
'And some people just try to create problems where there are none' hard not to when they come out with stuff like this.
Gloria 11 months ago
Thought there was some games that used the camera on it ZF, not sure as I never had one.
JoeToots 11 months ago
that second analog stick will be like trying to play games on my old sony walkman phone.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Solatorobo:Red the Hunter was one game that took advantage of the DSI.
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
That was still playable on original DS though at least.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
That is true. Anyhoo no one is forcing you to buy a 3DSXL+ (That is what I'm calling it) I'm sure they will release an add-on for the extra buttons (The better Hardware will still be a problem though)
Gloria 11 months ago
They already did an add on for the extra buttons, circle pad pro.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Did the Circle pad pro have the bumper buttons? Never used one
Gloria 11 months ago
Yep.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Then there is no problem
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
So I'll have no problems buying and playing Xenoblade 3DS on the 3DS I have right now? Cool, then sure, no problem. Btw, the Circle Pad Pro has one bumper button, so older 3DS models are still two buttons short however you slice it.
Gloria 11 months ago
You're not fooling anyone pretending you have a 3DS.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
You can't have everything. It was this or don't rerelease Xenoblade at all. I would have preferred a Wii U version
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Hopefully we get 3DS versions of the other Rainfall games
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
Xenoblade is only the start though, they've confirmed there are more "NEW new 3DS" games that won't work on the older machines coming. It's not really asking a lot just to be able to play 3DS games on my 3DS here I think.
Gloria 11 months ago
You can already Play Xenoblade on Wii U Nox. it's backwards compatible.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
The new models have better components. I don't really need to play Xenoblade on Wii Mode when I can load it up in the Dolphin Emulator
Gloria 11 months ago
There you go, no big deal, you don't need a new 3DS then.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Oh and word is you won't be able to play Xenoblade on the original 3DS's since the new one makes full use of the better components. Hopefully it will just be like it was for DSI games in that you will be able to play it but it will be a crappy experience
Gloria 11 months ago
I still don't see what all the fuss is about, it's one game that can be played on other platforms already, if it was a brand new game I'd understand, but it;s just a port/remaster and there's too many of those as it is.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Some people prefer to play a long (200 hours) RPG on a handheld.
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
It's not "one game" though, Xenoblade is only the first of what Nintendo have said will be a number of new 3DS only titles that are in development right now. They aren't all going to be ports, lets be real here. And Nox, Xenoblade won't be playable on current 3DS's at all. Nintendo have said there will be games that simply "take advantage" of the new hardware but work on older consoles, in addition to new console only titles, of which Xenoblade is one.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Shit happens. Deal with it. Bottom line is Xenoblade wouldn't be possible on the original 3DS so it was this or a Wii U release ( I would have preferred the latter)
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Unless Nintendo block Xenoblade from running on the weaker CPU units (Maybe) then they will be able to run the game (at your own risk)
Zombieflamingo 11 months ago
I agree with Kevin. It would be different if it was sony or microsoft that were releasing a new more expensive version of there consoles that some games wouldnt run on.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Microsoft: yes. Sony:no. I'm not saying what I want to correctly. Unless Nintendo build in a failsafe' or change the cart size, or even change the data to only run on these new consoles then Xenoblade and every other game that comes after it will at least run on the originals. I mean the games won't not run just cos of a little CPU power difference
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
On the topic of Microsoft wasn't there rumours saying they were looking into making a more powerful Xbone? Most likely that was BS but "no smoke without fire" as they say
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
"Unless Nintendo build in a failsafe' or change the cart size, or even change the data to only run on these new consoles then Xenoblade and every other game that comes after it will at least run on the originals. I mean the games won't not run just cos of a little CPU power difference" - So, what? Are you saying they're lying when they said it'll only run on the new consoles? And it's more than "a little CPU difference" from what I've been reading, don't the new consoles have double the RAM of the current ones? That's a huge difference.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
No idea where you read double the RAM, they never even mentioned the RAM from what I could tell. Upgraded CPU, longer battery life, better Internet browser ( does anyone really use it?) better screens, Amiibo comparability, faceplates, micro ad cards, & of course the C-stick. My Japanese isn't the best (or good) but Iwata-san never mentioned more RAM
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
The information comes from some homebrew coders going off of data in the latest 3DS firmware update. It was discussed here on Neogaf: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=885095 . Obviously that's no official confirmation, but this is what is being claimed.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
That's Neogaf that it is invalid. Well this is quite fun wouldn't you agree?
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Plus I'm on my phone so I can't click that link

NeoGAF is as reliable a source as 'some guy down the pub' . I've seen people moaning about this, some justified as they'd literally just upgraded to a 3DS and would have waited if they'd known, others just trolls pretending to have a 3DS and moaning for the sake of it. But these things happen, new hardware options are announced all the time, it's not the manufacturers fault if someone buys their hardware shortly before they announce a new option. I wished I'd waited to buy a 3DS when they announced the Mario Red one a few months after launch, but I didn't bitch and moan about it like certain people, and again when they brought out the XL I wanted one, but I waited because it wasn't a good enough reason to upgrade. This is though, like the GBC was to the original GB, and I'm glad I waited and didn't splurge on any of the options I almost did over the last few years. And with this I won't need to worry about a nicer looking edition coming along as I'll just be able to switch covers, and I imagine it won't be long before there'll be custom covers to order, officially or otherwise. I don't even care about Xenoblade, if I had I would have bought it on Wii, or still could if I was that bothered, or any of the small number of other New 3DS exclusive games that will eventually surface, no guarantee I'll like them anyway, been plenty of 3DS games I didn't like the look of and never bothered with, and to moan about them now if I wasn't going to upgrade would just be petty.
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
Neogaf isn't the source, the thread has a link to the homebrew site that is though.
PrometheusFan 11 months ago
"But these things happen, new hardware options are announced all the time, it's not the manufacturers fault if someone buys their hardware shortly before they announce a new option." - Yeah yeah, "shit happens" amirite? However, it is very much the manufacturer's fault if they release a "new option" that plays newer games that the older consoles can't.
Victoria 11 months ago
I think it looks great, will be upgrading to the NEW XL.
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Once a pie e of information appears on Neogaf it loses all credibility. In all seriousness they should have just waited till E3 to announce it as the next generation of their handhelds. When you buy a Nintendo handheld you run the risk of this happening, only the GBA didn't have a hardware upgrade (I think the SP was the same)
Turniplord 11 months ago
The GBA had the non-lit version which was then replaces in certain places with a backlit one. then the SP was out with a front lit screen which was shortly replaced with a much brighter backlit version. Nintendo are always constantly changing their handheld devices - it is no differnt than upgrading you phone every few years to a later model which practically does the same things except a few additional features. So far i've had (then sold to get the next one) a DS, DS lite, DSi, DS XL, 3DS, 3DS XL an now finally a 3DS XL Pikachu edition. I'll be getting one of these new ones also as it now has the same amount of buttons as the Wii U (possible PS4/Vita remote play style gameplayto be announced?)
Loli-Nox-Tan 11 months ago
Ah but this time your not going to sell your Pikachu 3DSXL are you? I'll be keeping mine for as long as I'm able to
Artemisthemp 11 months ago
To bad I can't play Xenoblade on my Pokemon 3DS XL
Gloria 11 months ago
Might be a while Nox, of all the covers announced so far there's no Pikachu one, although I'm sure there will be sooner or later, or at least the option for custom covers from some enterprising third party. http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/08/nintendo_shows_off_38_kisekae_plate_changeable_covers_for_new_nintendo_3ds
Turniplord 11 months ago
TBH i've had nothing but trouble with the Pikachu one - i've had to send it to Nintendo 4 times, each time they 'fixed' it, they made something else fail (first issue was the wifi being on shutting down the console - apparently a common issue) so I don't know. Depending on the price, I'll prob have to sell it to help pay towards the new one (obv after I have the new one in order to transfer all the data across, grrrrr)
Gloria 11 months ago
Unlucky, Nintendo usually have pretty good build quality, I've never had anything go wrong with any Nintendo hardware ever. Mind you I'm pretty careful with things, my other half has been through 3 mobile phones in the time since I got my current one.
Akemi no Zero 11 months ago
I love Nintendo but i don't like the new look of the new 3ds+ much prefer the old look of the 3ds XL. Not sure what to think of this at this time, so i am not going to comment on this until more info gets released by Nintendo about it.
Robichoico 11 months ago
You know Nintendo. You should have announced this AFTER releasing the Smash Bros 3DS. I was all ready to go for that but since it won't play Xenoblade etc I don't see the point in getting it now :/
Gloria 11 months ago
Especially not when there's going to be a Smash Bros New 3DS.
