Rumours suggest that Microsoft could buy Mojang *update*

Update: More details on this deal are now coming through and it seems that it is very real.

According to Bloomberg, The deal may be concluded as soon as this week, though next week is more likely.

Apparently the deal came together after Mojang founder Markus Persson reached out to Microsoft a few months ago, based on a positive working relationship on Minecraft for Xbox, said a person familiar with Microsoft.

The two companies quickly agreed on the framework and approximate price and have been working out the details since. Interestingly it's thought that Persson will help out with the transition, though he is unlikely to remain involved in the long term.

Microsoft will be hoping to make its money back by expanding the number of game users and by expanding licensing for things like toys and movies.

Apparently, if Microsoft completes the deal, will keep the game available for rival platforms such as PlayStation, iOS and Android.

"The company thinks that this kind of product, like its Office productivity software, has to be available with high-quality versions for multiple platforms, including those of its rivals," said one of the insiders.

Original: Microsoft could be set to buy Minecraft developer Mojang, if the latest rumours going around the internet are true.

The Wall Street Journal claims that “a person with knowledge of the matter” suggests that Microsoft and Mojang are in “serious discussions,” about the deal. Apparently things could even be finalised as early as this week.

Minecraft has sold over 54 million copies across all platforms, which is why having the property as part of its arsenal could help Microsoft.

Mojang had previously said that they had no interest in selling up despite receiving offers from “nearly every major gaming company”.

Perhaps it's time for the team and creator Markus “Notch” Persson to cash in and grab a well deserved day in the sun.

Minecraft is available on Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and is coming to PS Vita soon.

I really hope Microsoft doesn't buy Mohjang since, it could mean no more update to PlayStation

Only way support for PS versions of Minecraft would be dropped is if MS go out of their way to get it delisted from PSN entirely, and doing that would be akin to cutting off their nose to spite their face. Though if there's any company that *would* do such a thing, it's Microsoft. Should be interesting to see how they justify the massive expenditure here at least when there's not really much to be gained. Minecraft is already on PS4, so it's not like this'd help save Xbox One or anything. Must be more to do with their mobile division if I had to guess.

It says in the article that they will keep the game available on rival systems such as playstation, so it is not going to get delisted from psn. The worst case scenario will be that any updates will come later. MS only do this because xb1 is behind in sales, once they catch up and close to ps4 sales or better they will stop buying up games and companies. Sony would not do the same if they were behind as they do not have the money for it. Hopefully sales of xb1 catch up then we will all be better off - ms will stop buying up stuff, and sony will not get complacent with the ps4 figures over xb1 and let the quality of ps4 reduce.

i'm guessing once this happens they will start the ad venue on youtube (like Nintendo) on all minecraft videos - something Notch told youtube they did not want. They would easily get their money back via this due to the amount of minecraft videos being uploaded by paid youtubers.

"The worst case scenario will be that any updates will come later." - If they plan to continue selling the game on other platforms then they'll be obligated to provide updates for all platforms the game is available on. If they seriously just allowed updates for the Xbox versions of the game the cost in bad PR alone would be pretty hefty to Microsoft, and as we've seen in recent times, they are desperate to dodge bad PR however they can.

So Microsoft should be rewarded for anti-consumer business practices by having a successful product whether it deserves to be or not, just so they'll stop with the anti-consumer business practices? What kind of twisted reasoning is that? Also, how would the "quality of PS4 reduce" exactly? I don't know what that means.

Microsoft are buying games rights and companies because they dont have many studios themselves that produce games. All the have is 343 Halo, the Forza people and Black Tusk for Gears series now.

All companies get complacent when they are doing well, and is why ms is in the shit hole now, because they got too cocky from the success of the 360 and made screw ups with the xb1, and doing the 180s etc. Sony has now won the console war, and even if they do nothing people would still buy the ps4, because it is the top console in the public eye. Sony rose up during the ps3 era with ps plus and bringing loads of great games free each month, now the last last month the quality of free games is worse, and the current crop of free xbox games this month are not great either, but better selection than what playstation have got. Also the ps4 updates are slow coming, whereas ms are stepping up more in that area. The only way sony will keep up the quality of playstation consoles is if ms or nintendo keep up with them, and remain hot on their heels.

"now the last last month the quality of free games is worse, and the current crop of free xbox games this month are not great either, but better selection than what playstation have got." - Ha ha... what? Plus had Velocity X2 free this month on it's launch day and it's been one of the best reviewed games this year in addition to five other games (Joe Danger Vita was also free on it's launch day this month). Xbox Live gave out half as many games this month and they were all titles that came out ages ago. I don't see how that is "better" by any measure.

It is all a matter of opinion, halo reach is better than all the free playstation games as far as I am concerned, but when you compare the games to what we got last year they are abysmal. In may last year we got Demon Souls, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD collection, Catherine, Hitman Absolution. All free, now we get no triple a full retail game at all.

Anyone who wanted to play Reach would have already done so in the years since it came out though. Also, PS All Stars is a "full retail" game... though I have to ask... why does there need to be any retail games at all for the games to be good on PS+ exactly?

I have not played reach, was too busy with other games at the time. The point is that the quality of free games are slipping on ps plus, and the lineup each month is getting as bad as the ones under games with gold. I doubt many people would begin to sub to ps plus with the lineup that came with this month, but it worked when they were dishing out like 4 full retail games in a month last year. All Stars looks like a cheap arcade game though, no where near the quality of demon souls etc The reason they were chucking awesome games out left right and center last year on ps plus was to attract people to the ps3 / ps4, now that the ps4 is the winner they do not need to.
