Japanese Charts, Sep 15-21: Nintendo smashes up charts; Bayonetta 2 debuts

This week's Japanese charts are in and its depressing reading for Sony and specifically Microsoft.

Still, Nintendo is still flying with Super Smash Bros now selling over 1.2 million and Yokai Watch continuing its chart domination, with a total of over 2.5 million sales so far. Bayonetta 2 also had its debut, although it only managed 38,828 units sold, which seems pretty low.

That Bayonetta 2 opening week is seriously awful. That's less than half what the 360 version of the first game sold in Japan in it's debut week.

Tbh if it released for any other console it would have sold about the same, unless it was the Vita

Did something insanely popular release for 360? Their must a reason for it not been nr. 10 on the list

"unless it was the Vita" - You're right, it would likely have sold more on Vita. It's a console with a proven hardcore audience in Japan, certainly moreso than the Wii U. You need only look at the number of brand new IPs on it that have had opening weeks with sales north of 100k to see that.

Nah, would have tanked on the Vita too, even when they love their handhelds the Vita is struggling to shift a quarter what the 3DS is selling. Good job sales don't equate to quality though, Bayonetta 2 looks fantastic, even Edge gave it a 10/10.

Vita sales relative to 3DS are completely irrelevant to the point though, and the point is that more niche/hardcore titles have a more receptive audience on Vita than any other console in Japan right now, including the 3DS as it goes (See comparative sales of new IPs launching on both consoles for example: Toukiden on Vita vs Gaist Crusher on 3DS). Also, it is very funny to see you pull both your usual "Bu but Vita no sell much as 3DS" bit in the same breath as your "Sales don't matter" bit without a hint of irony.
