U.S September charts show Destiny as top title

The NPD results for September in the U.S are in, showing Destiny as the top selling game for the month and PS4 as the top selling console for the ninth month in a row.

PS4 has outsold Xbox One in the US for nine consecutive months now.
It's perhaps unsurprising that Destiny was the top selling game, given they hype surrounding the game. It's also no surprise to see Madden 15 at number two, closely followed by FIFA 15. Perhaps Americans are warming to soccer now?

Elsewhere Super Smash Bros had a good show, with Nintendo stating that it sold 705,000 units in its first two days, with 135,000 of those coming via the eShop (digital sales are not counted in the sales chart below).

In terms of individual sales Destiny sold most on Xbox One, although this is no surprise since Microsoft gave away any game for free on its launch week and the Destiny units bundled in the PS4 hardware bundles do not count as sales. Digital sales also do not count and Sony claims that revenue on the PS Store is up 90% compared to this time last year.

September software Top 10 (new physical retail only)
  1. Destiny (Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3)
  2. Madden NFL 15 (Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One)
  3. FIFA 15 (PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, Wii, Vita, 3DS)
  4. Super Smash Bros. (3DS)
  5. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  6. NHL 15 (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3)
  7. Minecraft (Xbox 360, PS3)
  8. The Sims 4 (PC)
  9. Disney Infinity 2.0 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PS4, Xbox One)
  10. Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls (PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)

As for hardware, U.S journalist Geoff Keighley said PS4 sales tripled when compared to August, while Sony said that PS4 was the top platform for Destiny, as well as being the top seller for Madden NFL 15, NHL 15 and FIFA 15, too.

Nintendo said that consumers purchased more than 140,000 3DS units, a 55% increase from August 2014, and Wii U sales increased by 50%.

Microsoft said that it believes this will be one of its biggest holiday seasons ever, although declined to comment on its performance in September.

Year on year, total software sales fell 36% to $481.2 million, although that's likely in part to Gran Theft Auto V launching at the same time last year. As for hardware, this increased 136% year on year to $432.7 million. Total spend was $1.1 billion, a 2% increase in September 2013.

Destiny has the added advantage of being on one extra platform

Destiny was released early in the month whilst Shadow of Mordor was on the last day of the month too.

Probably a financial month which like the financial year starts around a third of the way though the calendar.

PS4 tripled sales for the month, with the rumour being that it outsold all other hardware combined for the month. That is amazing. Also, I believe that September was the month that Phil Spencer said the 'real fight begins' between Xbox One and PS4, wasn't it? I believe this would be what they'd call a 'first round knockout' in that case ;)

Doesn't even make sense. You're basically saying "I know you are, but what am I?" with that. You're clearly desperate for a fight tonight for some reason though, so I think I'm done here for now. Have fun.
