LittleBigPlanet 3 Review

LittleBigPlanet 3 is a fantastic game, the best in the series so far in fact. When the game was first announced I was worried that the series may have been about to get a little stale, but thanks to some new gameplay additions and some fantastic new friends for Sackboy, the LittleBigPlanet universe is better than ever.

Reading other reviews, I noticed some criticism regarding bugs and freezing, however since getting the game and downloading the day one patch I've not really noticed any issues that spoil the experience at all. Other than a small stutter when you open up the poppit to change your Sackboy's appearance or add stickers to the vast worlds, there's nothing of note at all.

What I love most about LittleBigPlanet 3 is that it just plays better than ever. Not everyone liked Sackboy's floaty ways, however he now feels much improved and easier to control and when you add in some of the fantastic new toys he has to play with it makes for a much more reliable and fun platformer.

Of course, there are now new characters too, Oddsock is a fast sprinting dog like creature who can leap over gaps and bounce off walls; Toggle can alternately switch between being big and small, allowing him to use his weight to push down platforms and then switch size, which results in him flying up into the air to higher ground. Of course his smaller form can also run faster and fit into tiny gaps, which is handy when you are being chased or the world is falling down above you. The final new character, Swoop, can fly and carry items, which is handy if anything is out of reach.

As you can imagine, all of these new characters add a lot to the gameplay, making the levels a lot more diverse than before. The gameplay changes as a result, being faster paced in certain places and a lot more challenging. It's worth mentioning that the characters are all introduced throughout the campaign, so you won't have access to them all immediately. You'll also not be able to play with different characters in the campaign should you play in co-op mode, likely due to how the story works.

The new mechanics are what'll really keep you hooked. for instance, one of the gadgets will have you bouncing a ball through a portal, which then warps you back out of the screen and drops you where you need to be, while another allows you to suck and push material, allowing you to spin wheels or create a platform for you to climb up onto. These are just two of the many gadgets that you'll get hold of, each of which add more to ways to play the game.

Perhaps the biggest improvement of all to the campaign, in my opinion, is that it just keeps going. You are only sent back to the planet when you have completed a world and the story feels all the better for it. Adding to this, what's interesting about the world's within the campaign is that there are linked levels to be found throughout, allowing you to take part in different challenges or visiting new areas away from the main story. An example of this is a new clothes shop level, meaning you can grab some new outfits, although to do so you'll need to collect the special bubbles spread throughout the main hub level for that world.

Got lots of content from previous games on PS3? Then you can import it all to the PS4 version. That's right, you can bring back all of your stickers, costumes and anything else you might have gathered in the past straight into LittleBigPlanet 3. This would be a deal breaker for some so it's great to see that Sony has delivered. It makes the game feels so much more personal when you are able to download items you have previously collected.

Being on PS4 for the first time, it's fair to say that LittleBigPlanet looks fantastic. Presenting the action in 1080p, the colours and textures look fantastic and the detail is just fantastic. You'll spend a lot of time admiring how great the game looks, so just remember to pay attention to the action.

I've had so much fun with the campaign and the extra popit puzzle challenges but as anyone who has played the game before knows, the community levels and indeed the creator mode are were this game is at. The creator mode includes a comprehensive tutorial mode for those new to the game, allowing you to learn the basics before going on to try and create your own levels. As usual the tools are very user friendly and some of the new mechanics make things even more fun. One such addition is the ability to create Power Ups, allowing you to give Sackboy his only special moves. It'll certainly be interesting to see how the community use this.

What's great about the Creator Mode is that you can create levels in the exactly the same way the main story is made. Every sticker and item that the main story is made up of is collectable within the game. You are also able to link levels within levels, essentially allowing you to create your very own story. What this means, is that with such a thriving community, the amount of gameplay on offer here is near endless. There is just so much you can do to create a game of your own, be that adding in mini-games, cutscenes or even weather. The possibilities really are limitless.

Whether playing the main story or community levels on your own, with friends or strangers or creating your own levels, LittleBigPlanet 3 has something for everyone. In a way it's the ultimate platformer and a fantastic game to boot. If we scored games there would be a 10/10 at the bottom of this page, that's how confident I am that you'll love LittleBigPlanet 3. Give it a try and thank me later.

I totally love this review! :) It goes in depth to all the new aspects about the game like the graphics, new characters and the gadgets. This is something that some of the other reviewers did not do and then went on to criticize the game. The bugs and glitches weren't good, however these are mostly fixed now. I thought it was unfair for the game to be criticized so much because of that. The Master Chief Collection had serious problems with its multiplayer and went largely ignored. I don't want to going on about it too much now but i'm loving the game so much so far. I'm still early in the game and trying to ace the levels. Great review :)

You checked the codes section on your account though they might not be live until tomorrow. I haven't even had mines despatched yet which is extremely annoying. If I could cancel it just now and just get it on PSN then I would as I probably wont end up getting it till next week from here.

Yes, i have checked the codes section, i have double checked my e-mail for the DLC code and i haven't received anything. Usually i would get an e-mail from ShopTo for download DLC codes, but this time i didn't get anything. That's really annoying, there's still a chance they could despatch it later today or tomorrow. I'll have a check on my account tomorrow and see, hopefully it's there. If it isn't then i would have cancelled my order and got the Extras Edition from Game instead.

Nice review Joe and I hope it's all as good as you say but after reading reports on the main LBP Forums about lots of major problems, not just bugs and freezes but the fact that the importing of LBP1 and LBP2 stuff isn't working, DLC isn't working etc etc I'm a tad sceptical. Did you actually try to import anything or open any DLC to see if it worked? Also did you play the exact same retail version of the game that we are getting or did you have some sort of special dev copy? Thanks. BTW even though I had an email from shopto yesterday saying my game had been dispatched First class it hasn't arrived yet.

Still no codes. Come on shopto, this isn't on, you've had our money and we haven't got what we paid for. I was expecting a leaflet in with the game anyway with the codes on which is how it normally works. There was no indication when ordering the game that this was going to be different. Why didn't you make that clear before?

They will come in time. I am still annoyed about the delivery of mine although when in comparison the amount of items I have had with no issue with this one I can forgive them.

Got one code but it didn't give me the costumes in game after I redeemed it. Peed off too because I accidentally deleted my entire adventure mode progress thinking I was deleting an Adventure level from my moon! AARRRGGGGhHHHH!!! Why did they call them the same name? Why not just leave it as Story mode like it was before? Also the chat window on here isn't working for me either. I've posted in the Monday chat section about all this too.

That's unfortunate Zombie, also Royal Mail have had trouble with deliveries. I got the code for the costume DLC packs but i only got the Mythical Creatures pack. The Hidden Animals and Lineage packs seem to be missing. I'm not the only one that seems to be having this problem :(
