Miyamoto confirms certain amiibo's will be discontinued; Reveals solution

Nintendo's Miyamoto has said that it's true that some of its data-holding Amiibo  toys will be retired, although it has a solution for those who would like to unlock the extras these characters bring.

"We're not making promises for certain figures, but the way 'amiibo' is designed is that certain games can have 'amiibo' specifically for that game," he told the Associated Press. "Other games can take advantage of past 'amiibo' that developers want to make their game compatible with. In the future, we have the option, if certain 'amiibo' figures are no longer available in stores, to release an 'amiibo' in card form with the same functionality."

In the same interview, Miyamoto also confirmed that while the company remains focused on making sure the Wii U continues to have a strong line up of games, there are certain people in the company working around with what will become the next console from Nintendo.

"While we're busy working on software for the Wii U," he said, "we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be."

What do you think of this news, specifically the fact the certain amiibo's will be discontinued?

I just didn't expect some of the figures to be impossible to find so soon after they were released. The Villager barely hit the shelves before he was like gold dust. It's disappointing. Especially as a certain high street game store are selling them for £4 dearer than the official Nintendo store itself. Their prices changed three times in as many days.

I think the reason some are unavailable now is due to stock shortages. It seems they plan on discontinuing them later on, and probably the ones that do not sell so well. They are probably only saying this to encourage sales.

As with everything if every d**khead looking to make a little profit buys all the stock then it's no wonder there are shortages

Wanted to collect the Fire emblem guys - guess there no point if Marth is now 20+ quid. I'll just stick to buying all the Zelda ones :) got Zelda and link with Sheikh and Toon link on order and will order Gannondorf too. I'm not one of those people buying to leave in the box or buying and pulling out the foil (which is essentially the same as opening btw and makes leaving them packaged useless as they are not worth anymore than open ones) I've opened mine and use them. I see people complaining about people buying the stock to re-sell yet they were going to get them to keep in boxes to re-sell in the future - whats the difference?

Difference is that I'm leaving them in the box cos they look better on my shelf that way

really? so you have pulled out the foil so you can use them but leaving them in their case. Sounds like a way to try and preserve them for re-selling purposes. Least you know that they wont be worth anymore than opened ones. I've just put up a shelf for all my Amiibo's, Disney Infinity and Skylander figures. Just found out Argos near me has all the above Amiibos in stock so i'm going to go buy Marth tomorrow for 10.99

The way I'm see it I'm paying £10.99 for figure & the box. I'm not throwing away something I paid for

fair enough - just don't see the point in keeping them in boxes - bulky and not very practical to use. Got 2 Marth's on order, one for me and one for a friend - picking up tomorrow. Villager and wii fit are all out of stock near me though - nevermind. Also ordered a few Ash Ketchum and Link figures from Argos - so cheap compared to what people are charging on Amazon (not amiibos but official licensed products)
