Microsoft confirms DRM strategy following Far Cry 4 issues

Xbox One users will still be able to download and play games they have purchased digitally even if the title is removed from the Xbox Store.

Earlier in the week Clarification Far Cry 4 was temporarily removed from the Xbox One Store, which in turn locked out digital owners of the game. This, however, appears to have been a glitch, rather than a DRM issue.

"If customers own the rights to a game, they can visit their download history and initiate a re-download whenever they please - even if the game has been delisted from Xbox Store and is no longer available for purchase," a Microsoft representative confirmed.

The previous issue has now been resolved, but it seems that if this happens again the future then gamers won't be faced with the same issues.

If you are still worried, then you can always buy retail, eh?

I have the digital version of Far Cry 4 as got it free from the Unity Season pass thing, but they should all still be available for re-download while the console is active. I bought the Xbox originals version of the first Destroy All humans and I can still download that, despite it no longer available to buy. My current concern atm is that I bought Arrow Season 2 in the "sale" a few weeks ago on Xbox ONE, but when accessing it on Xbox 360, it said it will no longer be available to download or stream from 31/12/14, but now changed to 12/01/15. Will this affect Xbox ONE too? I downloaded all episodes to the Xbox 360 anyway, as it gives guaranteed smooth playback, but it expiring this soon, is not good. I have 2 niggles with the xbox ONE - 1) I can not see an option to download videos to the console, it is streaming only, and 2) I wish all disc based games did not need to be installed, I wish you could choose to play the game straight from disc like the Xbox 360 - if friends come over and want a quick game for 30 mins then it is not possible, as it takes 30 mins to install, so you have to keep it installed on the HDD for games to play with friends, making retail less attractive.

Going forward with digital and unable to trade, although MS have stated they plan on making it possible to trade in digital games, then until they do I will stick with older games longer eg I doubt I will bother getting Forza 6 on day one, will pick that one up when it gets really cheap, unless can give up the licence for Forza 5 to get some MS credit to put towards Forza 6. Pretty much what I do with PC and Steam.

I also wonder if you will still be able to re-download games for the Xbox 360 when MS finally stop supporting it. If not, I will need to buy a tonne of Xbox consoles / USB sticks / HDDs!
