Nintendo to release smartphone games; New console concept in the works

Nintendo is to work with mobile developer DeNA to create new games based on its current IP for smartphones.

All existing Nintendo IP is included in the deal, although the company has announced that it will not be porting any existing titles and will instead focus on creating new experiences.

“Both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo’s IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices,” said Nintendo in a statement.

“To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimised for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.”

In addition to the above, Nintendo has also revealed that it is currently working on a new home console currently known as 'The NX'.

"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems,” said Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata.

"On the contrary, because now we have decided on how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than before.

"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'."

Nintendo says that there will be more information about this ‘brand new concept’ and ‘dedicated games platform’ next year.

This is certainly interesting news. But what does it mean for Nintendo's very successful handheld division? Is there a need for the 3DS if Nintendo is planning on going mobile? We'll find out when Nintendo reveals more on 'The NX' concept we guess.

Not exactly news that Nintendo are working on a new console, they do that as soon as they get the latest one in the shops, as do all console manufacturers. Not sure the smartphone games are a good idea, they'll probably bring in some cash, but they'll also probably be a bit crappy and may harm the reputation of their IP's.

It's meant to exist beside the Wii U not replace the Wii U. Though the DS wasn't intended to be a replacement for the Gameboy ether.

Been saying for years Nintendo would move into the mobile business eventually.

Considering how massive the Mobile platform is in Japan it would be stupid not to. I just realized a few days ago how massive it actually is

The whole Smartphone thing isn't really for the West in first place anyway, the West is just a bonus

Not the same games Nintendo release on their consoles. The partnership with DeNA is for DeNA to be able to use any Nintendo IP for a mobile game that they'll develop

So will I be able to play Mario on my iPhone then or what?

If DeNA decide to make a Mario game for it. What I'm saying is the Ninty game that you would play on IOS won't be the same experience as on their own platforms.

I'm going to laugh when these idiots who think they are going to get proper Nintendo games on their phones get some crappy freemium games with Nintendo skins on them.

I don't want a "proper" Nintendo game, I just wanna play Mario without buying an entire console or handheld. Mario IMO is the only decent thing Nintendo has.

Well, I hope you're happy with some crappy runner type game, because that's likely the closest thing to a Mario game you'll get from this.

I'm guessing if Fire Emblem, Metroid etc were on the PS4/X1, then Danny would take a massive shine to them.

You are both right, wiki classifies it as "tactical role playing". TRPG or SRPG. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Emblem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_role-playing_game
