Shenmue 3 reaches its Kickstarter goal on day one

Shenmue 3 has been a long time coming, although it seems that it is coming after launching a Kickstarter live on Sony’s E3 stage during the show and now meeting its funding goal.

Yu Suzuki, designer of the original games wanted $2,000,000 in funding and now he has it thanks to 26,084 generous backers, making for a current total at the time of $2,11,844.

The campaign still has 31 more days to go and when it does finally end, who knows what the total will be for the PS4 and PC game. It could be at least double, or who knows, maybe even more.

My friend knows one of the guys who has forked over $10,000 for the dinner with the creator. Crazy money! Glad to see it's funded. I've only ever seen people play the game, but I've got fond memories of it

Still trying to get my head round what this had to do with Sony apart from its gonna be on PS4. If there kickstarting it then Sony is not putting any money in.

they will get a % of all the sales once it hits retail plus sony probably set up exclusivity with them in return for promoting it at E3 - otherwise why not do a MS version too?

Shenmue kickstarter wouldnt of needed much promoting it would of spread like wild fire. Presuming Sony have put some money in somewhere as would of thought it would cost more then £2mil to make a new shenmue game.

That is what I don't understand because if it's cost 70million to make shenmue on dreamcast 15 years ago just how on Earth is a few million gonna even scratch the surface.

just googled a few thing s- the first one was about 40 million dollars according to wiki - IGN reported 70 but it wasn't that much, and it cost that much because they had to develop their own engine to deal with the physics and quality of the game. This time round it is all built in Unreal so they don't have to worry about that. So it will be a lot cheaper to make this time round - plus last time it took 5 years, this is going for 2 if they are on schedule.

some places even hint that it cost the 40 million to do both 1 and 2 as they were developed practically at the same time

It's already the 8th highest funded video game in Kickstarter history and still has 31 days to go - it should break 4 million easily, and surely a publisher will come in and stump up more to fully support it.

That 2 million was just a trigger to show the investors that there is a huge demand for this game, anyone that thinks Shenmue 3 could be developed for a measly 2 million is living in cuckoo land. The first 2 games development costs as some of you have mentioned was totalled 70+ million which nearly bankrupted Sega in the process forcing them to exit the gaming industry as a console maker and only focusing on software. It seems obvious to me that Sony is probably footing the bill for the majority of development costs and publishing the game hence the console exclusivity.

What is also surprising is Sega just letting yu Suzuki make a shenmue game, unless they are taking a cut of sales or something because I'm assuming Sony will be publishing it now and not Sega, they must have just thought well he made us millions in the 80s and 90s so go make your stupid game what everyone wants whilst we downsize again and release crap mobile games and ruin sonic a bit more.
