Shenmue 3 is a record breaker *update*

Update: Shenmue 3 has now passed the $3 million mark and still has a whole month to go.

In fact IGN reports that Shenmue 3 has taken the Guinness World Record for fastest video game to raise $1 million in contributions on a crowdfunding platform, taking the honour away from Torment: Tides of Numenera.

The only other Kickstarter to breach $1 million faster was the Pebble smartwatch, which raised that amount in just 46 minutes.

How much will the game go on to raise? Who knows, but if it continues at this pace we can already see it could change the landscape of gaming, with other big name publishers lining up to test the waters with games fans want a sequel too/remade.

Original: Sony’s Gio Corsi has confirmed that the publisher is aiding development of Shenmue 3, saying that the game was the most frequently requested title for his Third-Party Production team to work on.

The problem was, no-one really knew is the game would be a success, so the Kickstarter was a way to test the waters and see if fans were willing to put their money where their mouth is: “If the fans come in and back it, then absolutely we’re going to make this a reality.”

Shenmue 3 marks the first time that a campaign has set funding goals just to test the waters with players and given that it has been successful, this could very well lead the way for other publishers to copy this formula when bringing back popular titles from the past.

Currently funding stands at $2,888,876 with 30 days to go.

It was a test guise... but seriously, we are keeping the millions of dollars...
