Project Morpheus is ready to go, but the games aren't

Sony Computer Entertainment’s Virtual Reality headset, Project Morpheus is ready, according to Dennis Castleman, hardware R&D engineer at SCE.

So what is the hold up then? Well it seems its' the games. “I’ve been working on Sony’s project Morpheus for 3 years, it’s going to go to market in 2016," said Castleman on his Facebook page.

"It’s a bit different for things like cell phones or established technologies. When I was designing televisions it was usually 18 months to get a new model into production. A VR HMD is a bit different it also takes time for the component vendors to ramp up for million unit volumes.”

Here's the important part, “In our case the HMD hardware is ready to go, we’re just waiting for the game titles to catch up with the hardware.”

Castleman also mentioned Sony's competitor, saying “Oculus faces a tougher battle getting the Rift to market. They are relying on a contract manufacture in china to produce their units. They are a new company without any volume manufacturing experience, they do have lots of cash and of course their parent company has deep pockets so capital isn’t going to be a problem. They have a lot of work ahead to successfully pull of the Rift introduction. No one on their executive team has any experience bringing high volume consumer devices to market.”

It seems to us that Sony will no doubt be marketing it's virtual reality headset heavily over the later part of the year. Let's just hope the games are ready for launch so that it gets the best start possible. It'll need to make a positive impression from the off if virtual reality is to be anything more than a fad.

No games have really been announced by Sony. All we know about is the tech demos, though I have a sneaking suspicion that No Man's Sky will be a morpheus title.
