Gran Turismo series hits 72.6 million

SCEA has shared the sales statistics for Gran Turismo 6 and other games in the series, revealing that the latest game has sold 2.37 million, bringing the Gran Turismo franchise to 72.6 million copies sold across its 17-year history.

This news comes via a litigation which is currently taking place in which the Italian flooring company VIRAG accuses Sony of intentionally choosing to include the VIRAG mark on a simulation of the bridge from the Monza Track.

It seems to us they should be happy for the free advertising, but what do we know.

When you compare the 2.37 million sold compared to other games in the series, it actually seems quite low, although the PS4 was announced, so it's perhaps understandable.

In the millions:

Gran Turismo 10.850
Gran Turismo 2 9.370
Gran Turismo 3 A-spec 14.890
Gran Turismo Concept Series 1.560
Gran Turismo 4 “Prologue” 1.400
Gran Turismo 4 11.730
Gran Turismo 5 “Prologue” 5.350
Gran Turismo PSP 4.220
Gran Turismo 5 10.890
Gran Turismo 6 2.370

With the series being so popular overall, it seems to us that it is only a matter of time before we hear of a Gran Turismo game for the PS4. Perhaps it'll be announced this year, as Sony has plenty of opportunity in the coming months.

I use to love the series right up to 5 & 6 but don't know what happened but I just couldn't get into the last two. I was hoping that by now we would have heard news on GT7, I've read whispers, some saying it won't appear until 2017, a few sites said we might not see it at all. Who knows but Sony in my opinion need a killer racing title for the PS4. Don't get me wrong, Drive Club was an ok racer but not a patch on the GT series of old.
