Dark Cloud may be next for PS2 backwards compatibility on PS4

PlayStation 2 game emulation is already here thanks to the release of the Star Wars titles released with the Darth Vader console. However it's still not been officially announced and when it is, don't expect the games to be free if you currently own them on PS2.

News of the emulation has sparked up again today thanks to PS2 game Dark Cloud being seen running on PS4 and it comes with the revelation that neither discs nor PS2 Classic purchases will be supported.

Twitter user BradazKing, who posted a video also had a disclaimer showing the following:

The blurb for Dark Cloud also mentions 1080p rendering, Trophy support, support for Remote Play, Share Play, and game manuals displayed on a second screen.

From the images captured by BradazKing and others, it's not possible to verify that the Dark Cloud trailer post is genuine and originates from Sony, although the style and formatting seem consistent with posts from the official PlayStation YouTube accounts.

PlayStation fans likely won't be happy at having to repay if they already own these titles, although with the games needing to be optimised and add in features such as Trophy support, it seems understandable that Sony needs to recoup this cost. Microsoft's backwards compatibility allows users to unlock downloads of supported games by inserting an Xbox 360 game disc, although PS2 titles are a lot older and likely need a lot more work to get them ready for consumers.

Said from the beginning they wont be free. if it was an emulation with no higher res and no trophies and a 1:1 exact copy - like the 360 on Xbox 1 - I would say yeah, should be free. But due to higher res, trophies, Vita support (as above) and enhancements - I'm happy to buy the ones I want - that's like saying if you buy a dvd then you should be entitled to the bluray for free when it comes out - you have to re-buy, its not literally the same game
