EA says over 55 million current generation console have been sold as of December 31

Microsoft doesn't report Xbox One sales, however EA has said that the combined install base of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now stands at 55 million, meaning that Xbox One has sold roughly 19 million units worldwide, in comparison to the 36 million PS4's sold by Sony.

"I think our business seems to be operating pretty consistent as it has been over the last couple of years. The console purchases are up through the end of calendar year '15. Our estimate is 55 million units out there which has exceeded virtually everyone's forecast for the year and now almost 50 per cent higher than previous console cycle so, all of that is very-very positive, all the gameplay we're seeing and the engagement and things like Ultimate Team we're seeing is positive.

"We're just conscious of the fact that there's a lot of storm clouds out there, we want to be careful that we don't get ahead of ourselves or the economy in our forecast for the business and that's what you're hearing."

Sony does report PS4 sales and revealed that PS4 had sold 35.9m units to customers as of the end of the year.

Interestingly, this means that Xbox One is actually selling better than Xbox 360 did at the same point in its lifecycle, whereas the PS4 are just well, phenomenal.

Either way, the fact that both consoles are selling so well is fantastic news for the industry as a whole and with 2016 looking like it could be one of the biggest yet for gaming, it seems things are only going to get better.
