AMD hints at three new consoles

AMD has revealed three new "design wins" for its Semi-Custom processor design business, helping it's financial outlook a lot more impressive than anticipated.

The three new chips, which are expected to be for the PS4K, Nintendo NX and possibly a redesigned Xbox, will help the company generate $1.5bn of revenue over the next three to four years.

AMD CEO Lisa Su didn't give exact details, although she did state that "not all of these products would ship this year." Su also added that she wasn't about to reveal what the products were, only saying, "I don't believe that we've gone through any detail about what those wins are, so I would prefer to let that come out as our customers are ready to launch."

One of the processors is expected to be the new System on Chip for PS4K, which is basically an overclocked version of the existing Jaguar-based x86 CPU cluster, along with a 2.3x more capable graphics component.

The other two chips are most likely to do with the Nintendo NX console and possibly Microsoft's Xbox refresh, although it's also possible that it could be related to the handheld version of the Nintendo NX, which is expected sometime in 2017.

We should find out more about any potential new consoles either next month, or when June and E3 comes around.
