Sony confirms the existence of PS4K but it won't be at E3

Sony has confirmed the existence of PS4K, although has also revealed that it will not make an appearance at E3.

The console, as previously revealed, will offer ultra-high definition 4K resolution and richer graphics and marks the first time Sony has improved the processing power of a PlayStation midway through the console cycle.

As expected, the console will be more expensive than the traditional PS4, which will continue to be on sale through the PS4's life cycle.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” Andrew House told the Financial Times. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.

“We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,” he said when explaining why the PS4K would not make an appearance at next week's E3.

However, he also added that consumers needn't worry about their current system becoming obsolete as “All games will support the standard PS4," adding that Sony "anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4.”

Both PS4 variants will also support PlayStation VR and House says that developers should also see a “seamless” experience between the two versions, adding that it'll only require a “small but manageable” amount of extra work when creating a game for both consoles.

“The consumer is attuned to a different cadence of innovation in technology thanks in great part for the upgrades cadence on mobile phones or PCs,” Mr House said when asked how consumers could react to this news. He also added that upon launch, the PS4K will make money straight away and not eat into Sony's profits.

I don't get why people think you need a 4k tv? If you have 4k tv then it will display movies in 4k and games in upscaled 1080p (it wont do 4k gaming natively) - If you have a 1080p monitor then it will either run better in 1080p than 4k or they will probably down sample the resolution into 1080p to create a clearer image. I just don't understand why people think you NEED the 4k tv, has there been some misleading info on this or something?

This is the part which worries me: "anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4.” - So they are not forcing every company to have 2 modes like in the rumours, its up to the devs, so not everyone will actually use the extra power?

Just because it isn't at E3, doesn't mean it won't get a price and release date
