NPD to begin tracking Digital Sales in the U.S

It's being reported that the NPD will beginning tracking digital game sales in the US.

According to MCV, digital sales data will only be tracked by publishers such as EA, Capcom, Activision Blizzard, Square Enix, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Deep Silver and Warner Bros, as they are currently the only companies to sign up to the service. It's being suggested though that this is only the start and big hitters such as Sony and Microsoft could eventually allow digital sales to be revealed.

At launch, data will only be collected from PSN, Xbox Live and select PC services, however the NPD is working towards including data from all the services it can.

"As has been experienced across a wide variety of industries, digital has made a big impact on the overall gaming market, and we’ve risen to meet the demand for a reporting mechanism that tracks those sales in a timely and accurate way," said Joanne Hageman, the head of NPD's Toys and Games division.

"With the participation and support of leading publishers – whose cooperation makes this possible – we are excited to launch an industry-first service that addresses a long-standing need."

SuperData and GfK Chart-Track have a similar arrangement in the UK to track both physical and digital sales in one chart.
