Every PS4 will be HDR Compatible next week

PlayStation 4 will get new firmware next week that will add HDR compatibility to all current systems.

The firmware is likely version 4.00 which is currently in beta, however it's a big surprise that HDR will be part of this firmware.

The firmware update makes all PlayStation 4 models HDR-compatible. The PS4 Slim will arrive on September 15 and PS4 Pro on November 10. Only Pro will be able to output games in 4K, however it's good to see that all current PS4's will support HDR.

might sound stupid, but what does this mean exactly? Are games going to look better on the original ps4 with this update?

Lawler, I believe it means that colours will look more vibrant and vivid on screen, and look a lot clearer.

@Lawler - as long as you have a HDR enabled device (can be 4k or 1080p as some HD Tv's support it too) then you will get a wider colour range. It wont be as much as on the Pro, but it will be a decent step I guess - I don't know if mine has it - it has a full dynamic range selection, but I think that's something different

Just been thinking - if we are getting this next week then it will be part of OS4.0 - so that means OS 4.0 is officially out next week

another silly question but what's the difference between this update and the ps4 pro?

This update just enables the output of a more dynamic rage of colours, the PS4 Pro is a physical hardware update, so its just over 2.5x more powerful in regards to Graphics and has an increased CPU. So this allows you get get better colours form games, the Pro allows you to get better framerate, Resolution, Textures and an even bigger dynamic range of colours.

thanks turnip and cj for the info so in your opinion is it worth getting a hdr compatible tv for this update and to future proof myself can't really afford the pro just yet

Your probably be best waiting tbh - if you can't afford the console at the moment then I doubt you can get a decent TV. I was looking at one before, its was 700 on offer at the moment. All up to you though. 4K tv's are coming down in price but that's because the cheap 1080p tv's are being replaced with cheap 4k tv's which don't technically have the new tech in them. The original PS4 will give off a better image visually but not quality. so brighter and more colourful - but your probably best getting the TV with the Pro when you upgrade to get the full experience. I'm probably going to keep my standard TV until about Jan/Feb then upgrade (depending on the price of the NX)
