Microsoft aiming for native 4K for first party games with Scorpio

Microsoft has said that during "the Scorpio time frame" first party games from its studios will all run at a native 4K resolution.

"Any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K," Loftis told USA Today.

Project Scorpio is Microsoft's 4K console which runs at 6 TFLOPS, 320GBGB/s, although other specs are still to be revealed, therefore it is unclear what type of performance boost the games will receive. It seems unlikely that games will be able to run in 4K at 60 frames per second for instance, well not unless the console is at the more expensive end of the market.

Time will tell, but Microsoft certainly seems to be making positive noises about its latest venture.

What do they mean by 'the Scorpio time frame' - I thought the scorpio was the last console they were doing as they were going for the upgrade method rather than generations?

This is why PRO is a total waste of money and time Only a fanboy would invest in such a half baked machine The futures bright the futures Scorpio

@Jason? How do you figure that? I mean if Scorpio doesn't have any exclusives then it won't really make all that much of a difference as PS4 Pro and Scorpio will run the same games. I think personally that Scorpio is MS' next console. I think it'll have plenty of exclusives, just watch.

Yes the PRO might be a half step but people are unbelievably stupid to think that every game that comes to scorpio will come to the ONE. Microsoft are basically telling OG ONE owners "Your console sucks, Buy this instead." I would rather a half step but know I can play all PRO games with my friends who have OG PS4 than a full on upgrade and leave them behind. VR is just the first in a long line of "Sorry, This game will not run on the Xbox ONE."

exept pro only runs only a few games at native 4k that are not taxing , the rest are upscaled . i read a article the weekend when killzone makers Sony's first party studio said " pro is not much of a difference only to visuals"

@TrueDarkAsassin But that is the point though. It should only be visuals. If a console changes the core gameplay then it isn't the same game. Xbox one owner are going to feel like they have to upgrade because they are not getting the full game experience where as upgrading to PRO can be here or there. If you like more eye candy then go for it but at least you will know that you can still play all your games with all your friends.

I'm just going to 'wait and see' with this one - they claimed the One was going to be a 1080p native device as well yet its took a while and still all games aren't (even 1st party). @Dark - they are upscaled, but from a checkerboard > 1080p resolution with extra graphic options turned on - so they still look a lot better. Supposedly the enhanced 1080p games are 4k downsampled as well. -------- Also, just read that article, if the pro is like buying a new GPU in your pc then thats good. if you buy a new GPU for your PC it can make games run so much better - it all depends on if the game is CPU or GPU limited. It just means you wont be seeing an AC with 2x as many NPCs as unity for example

how is it different xbox owners feel they need to upgrade due to less experience but pro is'nt if i had a normal ps4 and knew games looked better on the pro i know i would feel left behind its the same thing

Exactly. People need to realise that the ONE S upscaling and PRO upscaling are two different things. The ONE S upscales same as a high end TV and from the resolution the game runs at so 900p would be upscaled to "near uhd" but PRO is game dependant with alot of games running 1440p+ Then upscaled to 4K which gives a much better image.

But you are contradicting yourself. You state that the PRO version isn't much different according to guerilla BUT if you had an OG PS4 you would feel you had to upgrade? The scorpio WILL have exclusives. That is enough to make you feel you HAVE to upgrade because some games won't be playable.

i'm not here to start fanboy wars lol , just wanted to mention the article , i own all console's i just own 70+ games on x1 all my friends are on there now , i can get a pro easy when its out got one on order , i'm just happy to know my entire collection will work on the more stronger console out next year

I know and I appreciate that but surely you must have a lot of friends on xbox that maybe can't afford to get a scorpio. If you buy one and then game after game is exclusive I am sure you and they will be dissapointed?

From what I understand MS said before is that Scorpio games will run on all Xbox ONEs but at lower resolution. If they will all run at 4K / 30fps only with a Scorpio and a 4K TV then I think I may not bother getting a Scorpio, if they offer a choice of 4K / 30fs or 1080p+/60fps then I will get a Scorpio. Also if you only had a HD TV I wonder if games will downgrade to 1080p/60fps, like the PRO does. If that is the case then non 4K TV owners still benefit which contradicts MS statement that they won't.

Fanboys always gonna be fanboys.....MS release a slightly weaked device than Sony all ponys go wild in laughter at supid 900p device . Micrsoft smash Sony out the park with a new console and now its bad for various other reasons. Its pathetic Sony have bummed off their users with this half assed upgrade to cater for VR nothing else. Microsoft have looked at the bigger picture and gone for more and no doubt running Oculus Rift too. Nothing bad can come from being the best device on the market with the most power and having the best games. If games come for the new machine all well and good thats what happens on every device in the world at least they are offerinbg the backwards compatability like this gen and every other gen going forward now. Sony is going to get hammered but dont let the truth get in the way of your trolling

@jason... Like many on here I enjoy game experiance regardless of the system it runs on and own all three current consoles so am not a "fanboy" of any system.... I have to ask if you hate the Playstation brand (for whatever reason) why don't you sell your Ps4 ? You go on about "power" is everything but you prefer the xbox one over the ps4 when it isn't as "powerful"...yet It hasn't stopped you enjoying it and quite rightly so as the Xbox one is a good console. Halo and Gears are fantastic games. I just wonder where did the hate come from and why continuously "troll" about them as you would say ? Just curious that all ?

@jason agree , been reading tweets this morning how scorpio won't do very good fps , when i just herd call of duty can only just do 39fps on the pro. lmao

At the end of the day 60fps>4K. Scorpio will only be able to do 30fps at true 4K, as PCs of equivalent specs can only just get 30fps. PCs themselves have only just managed to get 60fps at 4K, but the cost is huge, over £1000. The only way Scorpio will get 60fps is if it is upscaled 4K from 1440p or something or a game that is not very taxing, or they upgrade the specs.

@true - that's it running in native 4k though and based on a video (not truly representative of the actual gameplay) and based on an early build due to it being put together for the event before optimisations are in there. They have already said the 1080p modes are 60fps. Bring us back to the big question though - how many of the 40m gamers out there have HDR 4k TVs (the ones which are about £800+ for a decent size) in comparison to how many have HDTVs? I would say about 5% of people (if that) will actually run these above 1080p

I have a top end 4K HDR LG TV, I currently have the PS4 but what should I go for? PS4 Pro or wait until the Scorpio is released, or should I go for the One S? I've always had a PlayStation but I'm open minded!

@Paula - if you have PS4 games now and you want to take advantage of your TV without having to buy the games again, then the Pro will be for you. Ignore the S - the only thing that's good for in your situation will be the 4k Bluray player (inside its still the Xbox one so it wont be any better than your PS4). However ,if you don't have many games, don't mind waiting over a year and paying probably 50% more than the PS4 pro then go for the Scorpio. Its all about whether you want the enhancements now or you want to wait to see what MS actually puts together

Its a no brainer backwards compatability more power better graphics better exclusives. Its got to be Scorpio unless you want to waste money for short term gain and long term loss as youll end up buying a scorpio like everyone else anyway
