How to get the best out of HDR on your 4K HDR compatible TV

Got a new Xbox One S and want to calibrate your 4K HDR TV in order to make the most out of Forza Horizon 3? Well read the following guide for some tips.

If you didn't know, Xbox One S has a built in HDTV calibration walk-through, which can help optimise your brightness, contrast, and colour to get the best possible picture for your Games and Movies. Accessing this is simply a case of going to Settings > Display & sound > Video output > Calibrate HDTV. This will then walk you through optimisation for your 4k HDR TV.

The Xbox One S will also tell you the sort of content that your 4K TV supports, here's an example from a screen we took.

HDR support means deeper colours and richer contrast, which gives your game a more realistic look.

As Microsoft’s first Xbox One S game to feature support for HDR, Forza Horizon 3 takes full advantage of HDR’s expanded contrast ratio and colour accuracy. If your TV supports HDR then you'll see an option when you first start up the game which allows you to adjust the game's HDR brightness, we seen in the screen below. This option can also be found via the game's menu settings.

As mentioned in our review, the difference in HDR is "just stunning". The colours bleed out of the screen in HDR and really add a whole new sense of realism to proceedings.

The only issue we have found so far is when trying to share screens on social media, which shows the screens as washed out, probably due to the fact that they are HDR screens and therefore cannot be shown off in their best light unless viewed in game. Hopefully there is a way for Playground Games to compensated for this, by perhaps patching the game to allow screens to be shared with non-HDR sources, we shall see.

In the meantime though, if you have a 4K HDR TV, it is well worth checking out Forza Horizon 3 as not only is it a fantastic game, but also a great showcase for your new TV.
