Wipeout 2048 detailed, cross-platform multiplayer confirmed

The US Playstation Blog has gone live with a brand new video, detailing some of the features we’ll be seeing in Wipeout 2048 when it releases along side Sony’s new handheld console.

In the video, Game Director Stu Tilley promises “one of the biggest Wipeout” games available, before talking about the game’s new features and content. With 10 new tracks, 20 new ships, new game modes and new weapons, the futuristic racer is pulling no punches when it comes to providing the meaty experience you’d expect to find on a home console.

Tilley also talks us through the three different control methods that the game will use; touch and tilt controls, the classic button based configuration and a new control scheme called ‘racer’. The game will also utilize the machine’s front facing camera for the ‘Wipeout Glory Moment’, which takes a snapshot of the victor in a race before showing it to all the other players in the game.

Wipeout 2048 will also offer gamers a rich multiplayer experience, with 8 player online races. Not only will the title support up to 8 NGP players but it will also let PS3 users who own a copy of Wipeout HD Fury join in. Any number of the 8 players can be playing on either platform, to provide a truly seamless cross-platform experience.

Not only is the inclusion of cross-platform multiplayer another reason to buy Wipeout 2048 when it’s released, but it’s also another reason to download Wipeout HD when Sony’s ‘Welcome Back’ scheme goes live on PSN as you’ll get the main game, along with the Fury expansion pack, which is what you’ll need to play against NGP owners when the time comes.

There’s no release date or pricing for the NGP as of yet, but you can expect to see and hear a lot more at E3. Sony’s press conference kicks off at 1am GMT on Monday.
