Dishonored
Dishonored is a first-person stealth action game from Arkane Studios, the makers of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic and Arx Fatalis.
It's a game about assassination where you don't have to kill anyone. It's a game about infiltration where you can set up traps and slaughter the entire garrison of an aristocrat's mansion rather than sneak in. It's a game about brutal violence where you can slip in and out of a fortified barracks with nobody ever knowing you were there. It's a game about morality and player choice where the world you create is based on your actions, not navigating conversation trees.
The player controls Corvo, once a bodyguard for the Empress, who seeks vengeance against Lord Regent who framed Corvo for the assassination of the Empress. The game is presented in open world format as the player can roam The Isles as well as the distant Pandyssian Continent, though the primary setting for the game is the steampunk city of Dunwall.
Reviews
PC Gamer (92/100) - It's a big, shiny example of so much we keep asking for in games, but rarely get. Luckily, the best way to vindicate it is to buy and then play an amazing game.
IGN (9.2/10) - Players who really take the time to enjoy the experience are rewarded too. The more runes, bone charms and money you find, the more you can augment and upgrade your character, and the more bad-ass you'll become.
EDGE (9/10) - It's a rare delight to play a game with such consistency of vision, its art design, level architecture, rulesets, storylines and writing all working in lockstep.
Gamespot (9/10) - It's a rare game that feels so compulsively re-playable, but Dishonored is such a game.
Official PlayStation Magazine (9/10) - It's a wake-up call for first-person gaming, resurrecting long-lost values and casually plunging a knife into the neck of the generic sequel.
Official Xbox Magazine (9/10) - Arkane Studios has crafted what's likely the year's best new IP, and by tapping into elements of so many of this generation's greatest games, this adventure sneaks up, grabs you, and won't let go.
The Verge (9/10) - With everything against it, Arkane has created a game with a unifying vision and design that stands apart from its contemporaries as something different. But more importantly, Dishonored succeeds as an ambitious game not content to take one thing and do it well.
Destructoid (9/10) - Dishonored is that game of 2012. It's the big intellectual property that comes to retail and shows up the competition by being bold, original, and - more importantly - brilliant. Easily deserving of its place among the BioShocks and the Borderlandses, Arkane's aggressive, non-aggressive, unsubtle, sneaky, thoroughly versatile tale of intrigue makes for the kind of game that reminds us this generation isn't all straightforward shooters and "me too" trend-seekers.
GameArena (10/10) - Dishonored, like Thief, or Deus Ex, is one of those timeless games you'll play a dozen times.
GameSpy (4.5.5) - A supernatural work of videogame art.
The Escapist (5/5) - Grab it so you'll know what everyone is talking about when the Game of the Year conversations start happening.
Kotaku - It's a bizarre, eclectic blend, the type of combination that might seem too ambitious to work. But the resulting game is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Giant Bomb (4/5) - Dishonored is an excellent game, and one worthy of your attention.
GamesRadar (4.5/5) - Dishonored is a game that you won't want to miss.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Dishonored is a work of rare imagination and skill, the sort of thing that can't simply be copied and repeated.
Joystiq (4.5.5) - Dishonored is remarkably polished, bending stealth action in new directions and offering plenty of freedom.
Game Informer (8.75/10) - The team at Arkane Studios has injected an array of cool possibilities into the simulated city of Dunwall, and discovering them all is a blast.
CVG (9.5/10) - One of the greatest games of this generation.
Brought to us by Arkane studios, the guys that made “Dark Messiah of Might and Magic”, Dishonoured is a first person stealth action game in the spirit of classic games such as Thief.
Dishonored puts you in the shoes of Corvo Attano, the Lord Protector to Jessamine Kaldwin, the ruler of the Empire of Isles. Upon his return to Dunwall from a mission given by the Empress, Corvo is forced to watch his charge murdered and her daughter, Emily, kidnapped. Framed for the murder, Corvo is imprisoned in the city’s dungeons. Freed by an anonymous friend, and given powers by a mysterious religious figure, Corvo sets about carving a path through those that killed his Empress for revenge, a chance to clear his name, and to rescue Emily. How bloody that path is, is completely up to you.
Anyone that has watched an episode of Game of Thrones can see the story elements coming a mile away. While the lore of the game is extremely well put together, it’s not what makes the game. It has a very wide cast of characters, but none that haven’t appeared a million times in other games. The religious zealot that believe his way is the only way, the old soldier that hates to fight but understands it’s necessity, these people and more all appear to populate the story. But it’s the world that really immerses you in the game.
As with many games now, Dishonored runs on a sort of morality system. You can chose to play the game stealthy, a silent assassin , a man that only kills if he has to and even then will try to find a non-violent way to eradicate his target. This “Low Chaos” play through gives the player the feeling of having the ability to go anywhere and do anything, and assuming you hide in a shadow at the right time, you’ll never be bothered by anyone. Finishing a mission, or indeed the game, without being seen, and without killing anyone, is one of the most refreshing feelings of accomplishment a game this generation can have.
Alternatively, you can choose to destroy everything in your path and leave your mark in blood across every surface in a High Chaos playthrough. This can be as interesting as the Low Chaos game, simply because of how your actions affect the world. About half way through your game, as the blood is flowing freely from every person you have walked past you start to notice that the world is a little darker. The flesh eating rats that plagued the world increase in number and even your friends are oddly hostile towards you.
Whichever play style you chose, you have a wealth of magic and weapons to hand to accomplish your tasks. A mysterious being known as The Outsider gives you his “mark” early on in the game, giving you the ability to warp around the world at lightning speed, essentially making running across the rooftops easier by giving you the ability to jump further than a normal person would be able to. Fully upgradable through the collection of Runes and complimented with bone charms found throughout the world, whether you want the ability to stop time, to take control of the bodies of others or to simply have the ability to dismember your foes at lightning speed, the choice is yours.
Dishonored is not without its issues. Using a modified Unreal 3 engine, it looks dated. It looked dated the day it came out. But the engine runs smoothly. With nothing but a little body popping to break immersion. The story is lacklustre and predictable, but with a little suspension of disbelief, it is thoroughly enjoyable. My biggest grievance is with The Outsider. Aside from a few words and a tutorial on your given powers, very little is spoken of him. A lot of the game focuses on him as a religious symbol, but aside from a plot device to explain your supernatural powers, he is barely mentioned. That disappointed me a little.
Should you play Dishonored? Absolutely. Yes. It in an amazing game set in an amazing world that drags you in and doesn’t let go for the entire time you are playing. Let your most creative killing side out through Corvo and watch the world change for everything you do.
Developed by Arkane Studios, Dishonored is an FPS which provides a mixture of action and stealth, with a little bit of supernatural thrown in for good measure. Set in a retro-future industrial world, centred around the city of Dunwall, which itself has been influenced by a 1666 London just as the industrial revolution was kicking in. In the game you play as a character known as Corvo who has been wrongly accused of murdering his employer and as you would expect is out for revenge and to prove his innocence.
In the demo, which we were talked through by Co-Creative Director Raf Colantonio, things started off in a dingy underground sewer, which looked exactly like you’d imagine it would. In this particular demo Corvo was on a mission to eliminate a dodgy lawyer who is causing all sorts of havoc in the town. There are many routes you can take to get rid of the lawyer, but in this particular case our path was already chosen for us, we were going to break into his quarters and kill him, although there was a few surprises along the way, even for the developer.
Like I say, our demo started in a sewer. As Corvo emerged into the light there were some enemies up ahead wearing face masks. Given that this is not a full out action game, in this case the developer decided to avoid them, sneaking around towards the lawyers headquarters. Unfortunately it wasn’t long before we came across a problem, a Wall of Light. Dunwall’s Wall of Light’s are spread throughout the city, stopping intruders from getting into certain areas while also letting guards get through. Thankfully by following the cable to the battery you can actually disable them or if you wish, even hack them by finding the blueprints, which in turn allows you to gain knowledge needed to turn them against the enemy.
Once Corvo had disabled the Wall of Light he came across a young lady being attacked by a group of thugs, at this point he proceeded to attack the thugs with his cutlass. Once the enemies were taken care of he then had a choice, attack the lady or let her go. The thing about Dishonoured is that you always have a choice, although the game does track what type of player you are, good or bad and there will be consequences if it’s the latter. So what happened to to the young lady? Corvo let her go of course, although unfortunately she was then eaten by a pack of rats right in front of our eyes. Nice.
Rats actually play quite a big part in Dishonored, as mentioned they can actually attack you if they are in a big enough pack, otherwise they will leave you alone. Also and perhaps more importantly, Corvo can actually posses rats, allowing him to get into small crawl spaces, which is quite handy for an Assassin as I’m sure you’ll agree. In this particular demo Corvo did just that, crawling into a small space in order to get into the lawyers quarters. At this point we saw a maid and were told that when in rat form you must avoid humans otherwise they will step on you, which makes sense.
Once the coast was clear it was time for Corvo to return to human form and sneak up the stairs, at which point we spied a guard harassing the maid. After a short discussion the maid left the guard, leaving him facing away from Corvo and making him easy picking. Once the guard was taken care of it was then time to find the lawyer and a few moments later, using Corvo’s ability to look through keyholes he was found.
Before talking about how Corvo took care of the lawyer it’s worth mentioning a few other neat features of Dishonoured. As mentioned, Corvo has the ability to posses rats, however he can also posses people and other animals, as well as having the ability to freeze time, which can make for an interesting combination. Corvo can also pick pockets, a trait that we witnessed in the demo just before he decided to cut the guards throat.
Anyway, so on to the lawyer, and after bursting into the room and taking care of the guards it was just the two of them face to face. Unfortunately the lawyer proceeded to pull out a pistol and fire straight at Corvo’s face, what was he going to do? surely it was certain death?..Well.. not for Corvo, instead he slowed down time, picked the bullet out the air and slashed the lawyers throat, job done. Interestingly the developer told us he had never actually seen anyone pick a bullet out of thin air before, which is very good to know, although he did mention that you could have possessed the lawyer and made him step in front of his own bullet. sweet.
One thing I failed to mention was that just before Corvo entered into the room to kill the lawyer he had actually hacked a wall of light, what this meant was that when it was time to escape the building after the assassination the guards pursuing him were fried as soon as they tried to go through it, clever huh?
Other than escaping a few guards in large modified armour suits this was just about the end of the demo, and boy did it leave an impression. Like I say Bethedsa certainly has some fantastic games up its sleeves, however this may just be the most fantastic of the lot.
