Borderlands 3 Initial Thoughts – It’s Finally Here!
| 2019-09-13

The day has finally arrived, one of my most anticipated games of the year is here, Borderlands 3! I have been hyped for this game since its reveal and I have actually gone back and replayed some of the previous games so I can be ready for the third instalment! With four new vault hunters, a new story which follows on from the events of the second game, and a nearly infinite number of new guns, Borderlands 3 looks to be the ultimate looter shooter experience. I have played the game for around two hours this morning on PS4 Pro so I've got my thoughts and as usual, my live first play video for you guys to check out so without any further ado, lets find out what I thought of my first few hours with Borderlands 3!

Initial impressions were very strong as the game’s box art and case look phenomenal. I already loved the box art design but in person, it actually has gold accents on parts of the art and it looks really premium! My positive experience continued as I installed the game and completed the tiny day one update which was so small, I didn’t even get to see how big it was before it downloaded! I was pretty much straight onto the game then and I was then greeted with a very deep settings menu which allowed me to prioritize framerate over resolution, up my FOV and change individual buttons on the control scheme, fantastic. This is possibly my best settings experience on a console game ever, so much customization I might as well be on PC! Anyway, into the gameplay then, the opening cut scene is awesome and instantly gets you back into the chaotic Borderlands vibe before introducing you to the four new vault hunters. The visuals on the cut scene look decent and so do the visuals within the game as a whole. It feels a lot like the previous games but updated to obviously make the most of new hardware. The menus don’t just function well, they look great too and I love the new fonts they have used, it all looks so clean.

Gameplay wise, it feels just like a borderlands game should, smooth and fast with plenty of action and a focus on gun skill. This time around though, I find myself utilising abilities more often and I feel like more of weapon rather than just the operator of a gun. I like this change as it makes combat feel more epic and strategic! In terms of story, the first mission (featured in the video above) acts as a tutorial however, it doesn’t feel as tutorial like as some other titles which makes it much more enjoyable for people who are returning to the series. The main story looks to be interesting as you team up with Lilith and the Crimson Raiders to take on the evil Calypso twins. Whilst I haven’t seen much of the story so far, it does look interesting and I’m looking forward to playing it through! Initial impressions are fantastic then, this really does look like the game we have been so patiently waiting for and nearly every aspect looks to be perfect. If you still haven’t got a copy, I highly recommend that you pre-order one and you can do so at the link below. Let me know your thoughts on the game if you have been playing it and as always, make sure to keep it ShopTo for all the latest gaming news, reviews, competitions and more.
