Call of Duty Modern Warfare Initial Thoughts
| 2019-10-25

After waiting for some agonising months since its reveal, playing the game during two separate pre-launch tests and reading so much about what could be the most important COD in years, we now finally have it! Yes, Modern Warfare is finally here, proving you complete the mammoth 56GB day one install of course! I have been quietly optimistic for this game since I played the Beta and despite trying to not get my hopes up, I still woke up this morning extremely excited to play the game. With an edgy campaign, a significantly deeper multiplayer than ever before and spec-ops on the side, this could really be a banger. So, after trying all three modes, what are my initial thoughts on the game? let’s find out! Keep scrolling for my thoughts and make sure to check out all of our gameplay videos too!

The first thing that struck me (after spending all day installing the game) was the immediate feel of refinement which is apparent across nearly all aspects of Modern Warfare. The menus, content offering, and visuals all feel extremely polished and actually finished for once. The past few COD games have shipped in an incomplete state and for once, I think we might actually have a finished game on day one! Available to play now is Campaign and Multiplayer, Spec-ops is available but only after downloading another 15GB add on which I haven’t completed yet. The menus for MP are full of content and tutorials which quickly bring you up to date with all of the new features within the game. The menus are pretty easy to navigate considering how much information there is and it’s the same story for Campaign although, its much more streamlined over there.

Moving into actual gameplay and Multiplayer feels pretty solid. Weapons have undergone nerfs and gameplay as a whole has a nice flow to it. Movement feels different to the beta and the mini-map is now permanently present in the top corner. It doesn’t show enemy fire but that can be seen on the compass at the top. There appears to be a lot of maps and the ones I have played so far feel alright. I'm not a fan of the lack of options when it comes to searching for a match, as I mentioned in the beta, I hate 10v10 and believe that I should be able to choose to not play it if I want however, searching for a mode will place you in a match of any size or even an NVG match. Gunplay feels decent and weapons do feel different enough from each other which is great. there is a lot of content to get working towards in MP and I look forward to grinding it over the coming months.

The MW Campaign starts off with a shocking moment and title card which instantly sets the scene for the game. I’m a big fan of this start as it makes no effort to hide its dark theme and I very much look forward to playing through it. The first mission throws you in at the deep end, straight out on the fields, no training and unfortunately, no NVG’s despite the fact that its pretty damn dark. Cut scenes are stunning and the overall visuals are very, very good too. It’s a fun, visually impressive mission and as mentioned, it sort of sets the tone for the mode. Overall then, I’m liking MW so far and I plan to spend a lot of time with it over the coming weeks. Our full review will be out soonish so make sure to keep an eye out for that.
