Ring Fit Adventure Review
| 2019-10-23

Nintendo have an unmatched back catalogue when it comes to innovation and their latest attempt at revolutionising the industry deserves to sit proudly in that list. Ring Fit Adventure is Nintendo’s latest effort to bring fitness back to the living room after their huge success several years ago with Wii Fit. Their obsession with making gaming active has seen them release numerous systems with motion control, and several awesome accompanying games and ever since the Switch launched, we’ve been eagerly awaiting a title to really make the most of those incredibly clever Joy-con controllers and now, we finally have the perfect game for it! So then after a full weekend with Ring Fit, what are my thoughts on the game? Let’s find out! Continue scrolling for my thought and check out some live gameplay below:

Ring Fit adventure may seem like an interesting concept and I myself was unsure as to whether the game would really work but my word does it! The entire game can be controlled with the Ring and it all just works perfectly, no complicated set up, just follow the simple steps on screen and before you know it, youll be straight into the action. The actual Ring-con feels very premium and if it didn’t have a Joy-con attached to it, you would probably think that it is a premium piece of fitness equipment. This surprisingly sturdy accessory also functions very well although, this is mostly due to how clever the Joy-con attached to it is. The entire game can be navigated using the motion control from the Ring making the entire affair a bit of a workout. This is great as you don’t even realise that you’re working your muscles when navigating the menus, don’t get me wrong, its not an intense workout but it’s still something! The only other accessory needed for Ring Fit is the Leg Strap which is used in conjunction with the other Joy-con to measure your leg movement. This does a great job of keeping up with your jogging intensity and still manages to feel very discrete which is awesome. Both accessories as a whole feel very well engineered and function flawlessly, as you would expect from the perfectionists at Nintendo.

Moving onto the actual game, youll find plenty of ways to play which suit all types of player. The main mode is Adventure which sees you run through levels, jumping over obstacles (think Temple Run) and shooting targets as you go. Whilst these mechanics do feel like a game as opposed to a fitness session, they feel a lot more casual than a proper mainstream game would making it very accessible for players who haven’t had much gaming experience. Whilst progressing through the levels in Adventure mode, you will encounter enemies which must be fought via Fitness Battles. These battles are pretty cool but I can help but feel they really slow down each level and take the flow out of the game in some circumstances. The player must complete several activities to attack the enemy and also defend from their attacks. These battles feel a lot more gaming like than the casual running and jumping mechanics. Whilst this isn’t an issue for me personally, it did have an impact on my family when I was watching them play as they were confused at this point. Think of it as a Pokémon style battle whereby you have to exercise to kill the enemy. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a clever mechanic but my parents especially found this complicated at first, perhaps a better tutorial would have helped this. From what I've seen of Adventure mode, it looks to be pretty good and I can see it getting quite difficult towards the end which is great.

The other modes allow for some Wii-Fit style gameplay where you can take part in select workouts or Mini games which fuse your workout with some unique gameplay. These are a key inclusion for players who don’t want that battle gameplay but still want a fun workout. I'm a big fan of these single workouts/exercises as they do feel a lot more like the old Wii Fit modes and are a lot more casual than Adventure mode. Workouts can be serious yet still fun and you are also able to combine several workouts into a routine that you can complete as often as you like. Each activity tracks your progress so you can see how you are improving every time you complete them and compare your times/performance to other family members. There is a surprising amount of different exercises considering its just the Ring and Leg Strap, I’m really impressed by how much Nintendo have managed to get out of these two awesome accessories!

The overall package then is a great one. With modes for players of all ages, all skill levels and most importantly, all fitness levels Ring Fit adventure is the perfect fitness game for the whole family. The game/accessories are innovative and simple to use, and both come with that unmatched level of Nintendo polish. Ring Fit really is the complete package and this is a game that I can see me, and my family playing for years to come. Once again, Nintendo have managed to get the people back on their feet and exercising in their own living rooms with their curtains closed, congratulations Nintendo, you’ve smashed it, again!
